HI Guys,
I think behind every good Aquaponiac, is a patient wife (in my case).
Because sometimes, we have to do some crazy stuff....like bring the fish into the dinning room!
With the big system still down and the little system trying to cope with 50odd rapidly growing trout, i had little choice but to bring the Silver Perch and Murray Cod inside!
(This of course, is going to have its benefits and its problems. Up until yesterday, these fish had been enduring 5-8DegC water and haven't eaten for months...this morning the water temperature has risen to 14DegC and they are extremely active. Soon they will be looking to start feeding again and this will mean that the 20 perch in this tank are going to very quickly out grow it....and i am not going to help this situation by adding an aquarium heater to bring it up to 22DegC).
As for the trout! with the Perch out of the system, i spread the trout across the two tanks and up close they are truly AMAZING colours and markings! And they are getting big!
I will post up a video tomorrow after they have settled down and are feeding again.
So a shout out to all the partners of us Aquaponiacs, thanks for patiently putting up with all the crazy moments!! They don't happen often, but they do happen!
Take Care everyone, and thanks so much to all of our new followers! Very much appreciate your interest in what we do on this little patch of planet Earth!
Off the perch
The low temperature last night killed all our silver perch in the pond outside.
It was a sad sight this morning, to see their bodies floating on the surface. We don't see them at the surface often, and this wasn't a way I would have liked to count them. Fortunately, the goldfish took it all in their stride.
The next project, I think, will be some type of passive heat storage for the pond.
Wow, it has been a long time between since posts!
Well it’s nearly winter here and growth has slowed dramatically, so it was maintenance weekend last weekend instead! Time to pull the clogged piping from the tomato beds apart and try to pry out the mess of roots!
It is a messy job!!
Compared to the amazing growth over spring and summer, the system looks a little shabby! But it will be ready in a week or two.
I have had a couple of questions regarding the appearance of the Golden and Brook Trout, so while i was removing these runaways from the filter system, i thought i would snap some photos!
They are feeding like little hungry demons and with the usual trout feeding frenzy, certainly a contrast between the trout and the silent still waters of the Silver Perch tank beside it!!
Take Care All!
