hello fellow Kit, in the spirit of bringing back the tumblr big sleepover energy please can we exchange recs? I just finished reading a selection of classic novels (O Pioneers/Rebecca/Miss Marple's Thirteen Problems) and haven't picked what to read next.
My reccomendation to you would be Whalefall by Elizabeth O'Conner which was pretty quick to read but very atmospheric! I picked it up at random in a national trust second hand bookshop last summer and was pleasantly surprised.
whalefall is on my tbr but i keep mixing it up with clear by carys david and getting around to neither. kit hivemind real ig. i will get to it Soon i hope
if you're game for another classic, maybe try netochka nezvanova which is a criminally under-discussed tho tragically unfinished early dostoevsky. i need more people to read it. only one with a female protagonist who is basically textually gay. beautiful discussion of the Creation Process in making art. i think it's more similar to another cather, the song of the lark than o pioneers, but they could hang out and hold hands.
also what did you think of o pioneers? it's my least fave of cather's great plains novels but in its defense it's a real hydrogen bomb vs coughing baby situation. rebecca is, ofc a masterpiece
sleepover weekend
