Goldfinches are known for their docile nature and unique song. They are associated with healing and the relief of suffering, featured in mythology as forewarning the crucifixion and plucking the thorns from Christ’s brow, as well as having a connection to thistles, which are said to protect against the plague. They are often depicted in poetry, and are symbols of endurance, fruitfulness, and persistence.

They are widespread, but have one of the strictest diets in the bird kingdom. They are late nesters and live in proximity to others. They are often kept as pets for their song, but they can lose it in favor of copying their canary cagemates’ instead.

Birds are often symbolic of the soul, as well as intellect, curiosity, and a higher calling. Their flight is universally prized as a symbol for freedom.
