Maybe it was the deep rumble of the Polar Tang. The creaking of the metal. The absence of light. You'd been underwater for so long, and for some reason it has started leaching into your mind. It must've been late. There was no noise other than the submarine trying to sail on despite the currents and the darkness this deep down. The blankets, which normally embraced you in their warmth, seemed useless in the face of the shivers that crawled along your skin.
Your bones felt wrong. Uncomfortable.
You wouldn't be able to sleep tonight.
Still, you sat up from your bed, your bare feet resting on the cold metal floor. Maybe you could be a little productive at least? Getting up to turn on the light, you set up your desk to write. Despite your inability to sleep, your eyes still felt dry, even as you tried to focus. It couldn't be that difficult to write your reports.
But soon, the silence that seemed friendly to your efforts had gotten eerie. That chill up your back returned. Your heart ached and for a moment you knew exactly what would help.
Well, exactly who would help.
But he'd probably gone to sleep forever ago, exhausted from his responsibilities as captain. His room was far from yours anyway, and going to him for help would be way to nerve wrecking to even consider.
Maybe you could go get something to eat. A snack to help the melatonin in your body actually do its job. Your bare feet padded over to the door, turning the handle and pulling it open with a metallic creak.
To your surprise, the door was not alone. Your heart skipped a beat.
Law, with papers strewn upon the ground outside your room, had been curled up against your door, sleeping. Most likely, sleep had taken him hostage when he least expected it. The bags under his eyes were heavy. He must've been exhausted. When you opened the door he fell backward onto your feet, his eyelids opening halfway, still dizzy with sleep.
"Law, what are you doing here?" You said softly, your low voice ringing faintly on the metal walls.
"I don't want to be alone tonight." Law replied in gravelly, deep words. Your heart beat loudly in your chest, looking at his disheveled bed head and sleepy eyes. You crouched down, slipping your hands behind his back to carry him to your bed, blankets still messy from when you'd gotten up. You laid him there and tucked him in, crawling in beside him. You took a deep breath, comfortable for the first time tonight.
It was only when he laid his head on your chest that your eyelids grew heavy, and sleep finally visited your brain.
