hiii! today we had a university kick off for juniors so i came home around NINE PM.

i just finished my HL econ project, took some notes on periodicity for chem, and an annotating some articles for HL langlit. phew.

i attempted to work on my chem lab, but i think i’ll just leave that for the weekend when i have more time to actually calculate stuff and use my brain.

now i have to answer a few questions for TOK and go to bed! the week is almost over folks 🥳🤞

I did a big mistake by doubting myself and took Chem SL instead of HL (I want to do med in UK) and now I'm switching at the end of the semester! HL is definitely more intense and will require double, maybe even triple the work esp for people with no chem background. But if you want/need Chem HL, don't doubt your self and not try it out! You can almost always drop to SL if it gets too hard! It helps if you like the subject too(:

Good advice from a fellow chem student. We all love to complain about chem, but it is doable.  If its what you love you should give it a try.

So I started in HL Chem and ended up dropping to SL. I agree; SL is the same difficulty as HL, but I found even in the core chapters SL had about half the work which was really nice, made study a whole lot easier. You need a good teacher though!

Time to unleash my opinions on SL Chem: It IS hard! I have as much work for it as I do for my HLs, if not more! That being said, there are a few topics that at SL you don't need to do which tend to be the abstract ones and those involving more calculations. Please don't take SL Chem if its not your best science as it is still quite a hard subject which requires some skill and a lot of work/study! (Also, this is all based on the syllabus which ends this year not the one first examined in 2016!)

I did SL chemistry 2 years ago and I loved it. My teacher was amazing. At my school, not enough time is allowed for the class and so every years students have to learn the Environment option on their own with 40 pages of typed notes provided by the teacher. I'm in my first year in university and in my chemistry classes we see the same stuff I saw in Ib without going in nearly as much detail, and a lot of students are really struggling! I got a 5 and a 85% average for my school grade.

To that person asking about Chem SL Do not take it if you don't have an awesome teacher Bio SL is so much easier and actually makes sense. Chem is like hell in a form of a subject If you want to stay emotionally stable and more or less normal, don't take chemistry Or if you still want it, just read about topics that the syllabus covers, you will see how crazy it is :D just an advice from a student of chemistry HL with a disaster in the place of a teacher :(

How about SL Chem? Has anyone taken it that has some advice? I'm not really into bio and I can't take physics unless I want to do Group 4 senior year... Plus chem is interesting but the good HL chem teacher is leaving :(

If you don’t have a good HL chem teacher - don’t take it.

Bio SL is basically set up for people who aren’t into bio that much, so you should look into it a bit more before totally disregarding it.

Chem SL is almost as hard as HL. Strike that. It is as hard as HL, you just don’t have to cover the extra options. Literally, our chem teacher taught SL and HL kids in the same class and just had the SL kids go in a back room and practice while we were covering the options.  There is almost no difference in the general topic syllabus between SL and HL chem. The only good thing about SL is it has more forgiving mark boundaries.  Honestly, only take SL or HL chem if you really enjoy the subject.
