Well, JGY plainly states "I killed my son" in the novel, and "Rusong had to die" in both versions. So he *didn't* have basic reasoning skills, apparently
well, he also says he killed his wife, who very clearly killed herself, so he’s likely being hyperbolic because he’s distraught, and counting the fact that he took actions that contributed to both of their deaths as “killing” them
but you’re right, the “would have had to die” thing is just one of those things I just tune out because it genuinely doesn’t make any sense to me, like...its so far out of left field I can’t wrap my head around it. anyone who thinks it does make sense is welcome to try to explain it to me! what could a kid have/be that would make him such a social liability later that he had to die (despite being “dearly loved”) that wouldn’t already be incredibly obvious at age 5 or 6???
