The Yule Ball Fiasco (part 1)
So, the main characters Mimi Johnson, she’s in the same year as Hermione, Harry and Ron but she also takes 5th year potions…. This fic starts when she’s in first year but it’s complicated and I’ve been writing it in bits and pieces so…this is a bit from the middle because I’m just too excited to share. Her and Fred have been secretly dating since…some time previous. I mean I’m not 100% sure on the time frame yet but it’ll get there. So they’re secretly dating but they haven’t actually been like “Hey be my girlfriend?” “Cool, wanna be my boyfriend?” so it’s kind of neither here nor there. I really wanted the characters to be good but I know people do stupid things when they’re teenagers and angry at people so here’s some people doing stupid things to the people they like. xxxx
P.s. This is going to be in two parts because I got excited and wrote so damn much… xx please enjoy :)
Hermione shoved the books into her bag and huffed following Mimi out into the corridor.
“You going to find the boys?”
“Yes, they’ll be up in Divination. So, I’ll find them easy.” She pushed her bag round onto her back, trying not to knock anyone in the crowed corridor.
The began making their way down the corridor, Mimi to find the stairs down to the dungeons and Hermione to try and find Harry and Ron after their Divination lesson.
Until Mimi heard her name was being thrown down the corridor.
“Yo, Mimi?” The boy slowly made his way down the corridor towards her.
“Hey Max.” she said loudly over the rattle of students. Hermione stopped next to her to see what they boy wanted.
“Has anyone asked you to the ball yet?”
“Erm…no. No, not yet.” Mimi said reluctantly.
“Do you want to go with me?” The boy said confidently.
Suddenly a wave of people around them made their way into the court yard, sweeping Max, up with them.
“Max, mate you coming?” One said.
“What do you say, Mi?” Max shouted from a little further away, trying to fight his way back to the stunned girl.
“Erm…Maybe, I …”
“Think about it, I’ll talk to you later.” He said, giving up and going with the wave of students going to his next class along with his Hufflepuff classmates.
On her way to lunch the next day Mimi found herself being cornered by the twins, the excuse being to talk about the homework Snape had set them the other day in potions. George seemed like he wanted to talk about the homework. He wanted to know if Mimi had done it and if she possibly had any tips to get it done in less than an hour, but she didn’t finish explanation of anything before he was pulled away by someone complimenting him on his Quidditch practice the other day, and calling him Fred.
Mimi felt her arm being pulled backwards towards the edge of the group of sixth years moving into the great hall.
“Max Cresing asked you to the Yule Ball, didn’t he?” Fred said when everyone had moved off and they were alone.
“Yes.”
“And what did you say?”
“Well, technically I said maybe bu-”
He gritted his teeth, before turning on his heel, fists balling at his side before she could finish her sentence. When he got to the bottom of the staircase he changed his mind quickly, turning back around making his way back to you, you still not having moved from where he had left you.
“I thought-“ Fred pulled Mimi to the side of the corridor, just to the side of the door. “I thought we were going together?”
“You never asked me.”
“No, but I thought it-“ Before this sentence Mimi hadn’t been annoyed, she hadn’t even been slightly irritated; but now she was.
“You thought? You assumed.”
Mimi looked sheepishly at your feet having spoken so angrily. “I don’t ask for much, Fred. You want to keep us between us, then fine; I’ve said I’m ok with that. It’s quite nice you keeping something quiet.” She smiled and stepped slightly closer, wanting to put her hand on his chest but moving away quickly and sternly. “But if you want to go to the ball with me,” She continued, “you have to ask me properly. You can’t just assume.”
And with that, she turned and made her way to lunch.
Later that evening Mimi was sitting alone at a small table in the common room having not spoken to Fred for the rest of the day. It seemed like he’d been actively avoiding her all day and she wasn’t sure whether she was annoyed or relieved.
He was sat across the room now with George doing something quietly, very unlike them normally but this year so far they’d been quite secretive about a lot of things. ‘Not that that was new for Fred’ Mimi thought to herself whenever she thought about it. Though she would always push it to the back of her mind when he looked up at her and smiled slightly, as she drifted back to her book. This time though he did not look up. He was totally focused on what they were talking about. They both got up from their seats, coming towards her table, making her panic slightly, but they passed her table and made their way to Ron’s that was next to hers. She moved her book up to cover her face when she saw Fred turn to look behind him in her direction before sitting down. The pages were too close to her face to read properly but she didn’t feel like she could remove it.
“Ron, can we borrow Pigwidgeon?” She heard George ask. Just a normal conversation; nothing exciting. The book had moved a little way down in its own time, making it much easier to focus on the writing on the pages. Mimi tried to focus but the importance of aconite in potions just wasn’t holding her attention enough anymore. She thought about going to bed and just leaving it all for tonight, she had plenty of time to do this homework and she wasn’t feeling it right now.
“So … you lot got dates for the ball yet?” As Fred said this her ears pricked up again.
“Nope,” Ron answered his brother who was now leaning on the table his elbows on the table.
“Well, you’d better hurry up, mate, or all the good ones will be gone,” said Fred.
“Who’re you going with, then?” said Ron. Mimi felt her chest go tight. This afternoon he’d probably answer that easily but now, he seemed all confident but…
“Angelina.” Mimi dropped her book on the table in front of her. Luckily it had made its way down in space, only hovering a couple centimetres above the surface so it didn’t make a very loud noise but it still made her jump.
“What?” said Ron, taken aback. “You’ve already asked her?”
“Good point,” said Fred. He turned his head and called across the common room, “Oi! Angelina!”
Mimi’s eyes were no longer looking at the book in her hands but, like some other people around her, she was looking towards the girl Fred was shouting to. Angelina, sitting near the fire with her friends, turned to shout back. “What?”
“Want to come to the ball with me?”
“All right, then,” she said, turning back to her friends.
“There you go,” smirked Fred to the boys in front of him, “piece of cake.” Mimi looked at the back of his head, trying not to cry. ‘Piece of cake.’ he’d said. She tried to lift the book up to cover her face, trying to cover the redness and the tears threatening to come out. She was not going to cry now. She was not going to be one of those girls. The book in her hands started to shake, through anger or through sheer panic , she didn’t know but she needed out of the situation.
Fred noticed Mimi packing up her things quickly and fumbling around. “We’d better use a school owl then, George, come on… .” he said standing up and leaving the room with his brother.
Mimi gave up trying to pack her things away neatly and just pulled her parchment and books into her arms, almost dragging them upstairs. She threw the things into her opened trunk, not caring that the book had fallen upside down and open. After sitting down on her bed, she swiftly decided that she did care that her book was like that and got up to pick it up, place it down neatly and sort through her papers so they wouldn’t crease.
After sorting her papers quickly so they weren’t in any position to break, she slumped down in her bed, throwing the blanket over her. A few moments later Hermione came in in a rage.
“I cannot believe them.” She shouted. Mimi didn’t say anything. “Well Ron mainly. Harry just seems to go along with whatever is being said, which I suppose might be worse, but Ron!!! He’s the ringleader here and he-“ She stopped suddenly realising that Mimi was yet to say anything. “Are you ok?”
“Me? Oh yeah I’m fine.” She lied. She was quite sure her friend knew she was lying but she wasn’t in any mood to explain to Hermione about everything and about why she was so sad.
“Do you want to talk about it?”
“Do you want to talk about why you’re so mad at Ron?”
Hermione sat on her bed, her arms crossed. “He’s just infuriating.”
“Of course, he is.” Mimi replied, sitting up and waiting for Hermione to start her rant properly, hoping it would take her mind off Fred Weasely.
On the next weekend, Mimi managed to catch Max before he sat down at his table in the great hall before dinner one night.
“Max, hey.”
“Hey Mi, how ar-“
“Have you managed to get another partner for the ball yet?”
He smiled and shook his head.
“Well,” she smiled back overly-sweetly, seeing Fred come into her peripheral vision. “I thought about it, and I want to say yes. If you still want to go with me?”
He nodded in a friendly way. “Yeah sure. It’ll be fun.”
She nodded again before turning away and making her way to a seat next to a Hermione at the Gryffindor table, who was silently excited that her friend had said yes to someone. She caught Fred’s eye on her way round, his face was slightly red, like he was trying to hold something in. ‘Good’ she thought.
Fred and George sat opposite Lee Jordan at the end of the table, but before the food came out Fred changed his mind.
“Sorry guys, I’m not feeling dinner. I’ll go and…read stuff through yeah?” He tried to catch Mimi’s eye as he passed the table but she avoided it with all her might. He’d done it, she’d done it, they both had dates now and he had no right to l look at her like that.
A second later, she made a decision that she was sure she was going to regret but she couldn't just leave it. Mimi’s eye went wide.
“W-what?” Hermione stammered, confused.
“I forgot I’ve got an essay due tomorrow. I need to go do it now. I can’t leave it.” She got up, and began ploughing down the hall.
“But dinner?” Hermione shouted.
“Bring me something.” She yelled back, before dashing down the hallway in search of Fred.
She got to the portrait and repeated the new password she’d been told, before crawling thought he hole behind it.
“What did you do that for?” A voice asked her before she’d even stood up properly.
“Why did you ask Angelina?” She inquired.
They both stood silently for a minute, just staring into space.
Fred eventually broke the silence. “I don’t know.”
“You don’t know?”
“I just did. I’m an idiot.”
“I see.”
“She’s alright. She’s really good at quidditch and I’ve known her for a long time…”
“You don’t have to defend your decision. I don’t care why you like her.” Mimi sighed.
“No she’s- She’s one of my best mates. And that’s it.”
“That’s it?”
“George and Lee just expected me to ask her.” He shrugged.
“So you did. Didn’t think you went with peer pressure?”
“I felt really childish afterwards but it’s not like I can take it back now. It’s not her fault I’m an idiot.” He took a breath before he continued, “I thought for a bit, ‘well maybe you wanted to go with Max, maybe you didn’t want to go with me at all’. I thought-“
“Well I’m going with him now so…It’s not his fault you’re an idiot.” She chuckled.
“So what? You’re not mad or…?”
“Oh no…I’m not happy. And you are an idiot. A massive prat I would say.”
“Yep, a massive prat.” He repeated.
“This doesn’t mean you’re forgiven.”
“No, no, obviously not.” Fred made his way towards the boy’s dormitory staircase, looking back at the bottom of the stairs. “Am I still going to see you in Hogsmeade at the weekend?”
“Maybe…if you buy me a butterbeer.”
“Deal.”
The second part is actually at the ball and goodness me…things get tense. I need to finish writing the beginning bit of the next section but it is 10 to 2 in the morning and I’ve got a busy weekend so I really need sleep. I’ll get it done for Sunday at the latest :) xx
Any feedback is brilliant :)
