GUZMAAAA!!!!!!
Alola League arc discussion: do you think the anime will address Guzma’s relationship with his father?
Warning! Possible spoilers ahead. Continue reading otherwise.
As we approach the last few episodes of the Alola League arc, a few things have crossed my mind while watching the past couple of episodes of the Pokémon Sun and Moon series. In this week’s episode, we see the beginnings of one of the league’s most anticipated matches (Satoshi VS. Guzma). There is no doubt in my mind that Satoshi will defeat Guzma (unless there is a major plot twist) and we will see a complete emotional meltdown from Guzma.
Since Guzma’s anime debut, this chapter of the series has provided us with some decent background to his character (a rocky dynamic with Kukui and a scene of a younger Guzma rejecting Hala’s teachings) and most recently, a scene (referencing the ending to Guzma’s character debut in SM 115) to which Plumeria has to clean up the destroyed second and third place trophies and medals that Guzma had won. An episode back, (SM 135) Plumeria lets us in on a piece of information that the grunts do not know why Guzma has never lost a battle before. I believe in the next part of the semifinals, all of this will unfold.
This leads me to wonder if the anime will ever touch on the not so subtle in game implication that Guzma was abused by his father. Given how the Alola League arc is wrapping up (and that Pokémon is a show geared towards kids), I would be very shocked if this was depicted in the anime, however, a part of me would not be surprised if this was depicted (or hinted at at least) in the anime. Thus far, this the Pokémon Sun and Moon anime in general has done an excellent job in addressing some touchier subjects in life (death of a loved one) and it would not come as a shock for the anime to show us that Guzma had a rough upbringing.
What do you all think?
Even though I would’ve loved to see the more over the top and fun version of our boy Guzma from the games in the anime I really like the mood he’s bringing to the story, specifically as far as the league arc goes, since we haven’t had actual villains participate or care about the league before. He fits in perfectly as an antagonistic force not only for Satoshi, but for Kukui as well, but the episode also highlights his personal struggle rather than simply showing him from the good guy’s point of view. As usual when Sun&Moon decides to get serious it does so in a stellar fashion.

PLUMERIA WHAT????
God, the following scene speaks volumes even without subtitles. Here me out.
Skull Trio arrive at the Pokémon School and taunt Kukui to come down for... something.
Kukui tells the class to stay up there and no interfere, to which Satoshi of course goes saying ‘but‘, but Kukui telling it’s fine, goes downstairs to confront the trio.
Kukui definitely expected to only have to deal with these three of the Skull Gang, since they were the ones to call him down. He seemed to try inquire why they’re here, but I’m not entirely sure. However, the moment Guzma talks, and Kukui turns:
The music first of all, gets quite serious, and then we see a worried Kukui.
Kukui immediately says in sort of a worried tone, ‘Guzma’. Like he’s seeing an old demon or something. Maybe not the right word here, but still didn’t expect to see him here.
The way Guzma turns to him, and then dares to smile:
It’s already clear at this point the two have some sort of past, as we already knew. But from this moment alone it’s easy to tell. But to the main point of this post:
Skull Trio seem to notice Kukui feeling a bit tensios here as they’re trying to taunt him, but then- god damn it.
A voice asks what are Skull Gang doing here, and we all know who it belongs to, Kukui included, without even turning his head at this point.
Aaaah. Satoshi and his friends are down. Even when they were told to not come. God damn it.
Kukui’s definitely not excited to see them down here when he definitely told them to not come down. Oh boi. I just kinda like this scene, y’know? It tells a lot about Kukui. Looking forward to seeing more.
