Yo, this ain’t even the championship battle, it’s the exhibition match so WHY AM I GETTING SO DAMN EMOTIONAL???

No, I’ll tell you why. It’s because Kukui is a proud papa whether he wants to admit it or not. And Ash is the adopted son who he finally let his mask down for.

This isn’t a “Will I win?” battle.

It’s a “Thank you for being there for me” battle.

i still haven’t gotten past the opening scene because i keep having thoughts about it. but this seems like something i want to really think about while watching them battle:

the kukui vs ash exhibition battle is the culmination of these characters and their journey in alola. i think i’ve said i believe that battling is ash’s - and by extension, this show’s - way of solving interpersonal things, a way of getting to know people or understanding something more about them. i think i touched on it back when ash dropped in on gladion training silvally, saying that ash wants to battle when he needs to communicate something or he wants something communicated to him: he knows the “language” of a pokemon battle and he really believes in it. it’s so interesting that the ultimate battle of sun and moon and ash’s alola journey (presumably) is going to be a huge 6v6 battle during one of the biggest personal events in ash’s life so far and against his parental figure who he hasn’t had the chance to have a proper battle with yet! whose personal life ash knows and has been a big part of for a long time now: he gets to know and connect the last piece he was kind of missing this whole time about kukui, which was how he acts in a pokemon battle and what his extended family (his pokemon team) is like. he’s had glimpses when kukui sent out his braviary, but he’s never really known how he battles.

this is imo why he is so EXCITED to battle kukui after having just learned this one huge secret part of kukui’s life as a wrestling hero he looks up to so much - he can get to know him in a language he understands the best, and probably in the longest battle so far in this series.

and isn’t that the best way you can imagine ending their arcs :’)
