What is the difference between smallfat and midsize?
They're both self-determined categories, so it could vary person to person. Smallfat is a way of describing yourself as fat, but not as discrimated against as individuals who can't shop for clothes at regular stores, can't fit into airplane seats, have mobility limitations due to their size, etc. It's not meant to be a hierarchical term to say you're better than someone fat or infinifat, but rather you don't face the same struggles as others. Midsize describes a clothing size, those in the higher end of straight sizes but the lower end of plus sizes. A size large would be considered mid size, and even though they're very average by realistic standards, it's still rare to see midsize representation in media. People were calling Renee Rapp (Regina in the new Mean Girls movie) plus size, and while it is good to see women that aren't stick thin, she's midsized at best! I've seen the term midsize being criticized for saying "you're just fat with thin privilege", but I've also seen it help a lot of people. I've seen women who were a size medium-large feel overweight because they didn't look like models on TV, get bullied for their weight for not being a size xxs, and still not be "overweight" at all. Midsize can give them a word to describe knowing they're not fat, but not thin either.
