you know most people who need smear tests and are scared to get them do know that they're important and getting lectured or judged whenever they say they haven't been is not likely to help. Also do not pretend there's nothing to be afraid of you might feel fine but people are different I sobbed after mine. I'll still go back but I would not tell anyone it's easy or guaranteed not to hurt.

I originally wrote it for a collection of autobiographical comics by women that didn’t end up going ahead. I was quite hesitant to share it at first, but think it’s important to talk about these sorts of experiences, even if it feels a bit embarrassing.

If you have a cervix, please please PLEASE get the smear tests done! Too many people are dying from cervical cancer, many through missed appointments or not wanting to get them done through embarrassment. They are SO important. In my opinion, the age fro smear tests should be lowered from 25 to 18. I had all three cervical cancer jabs but im still getting the smear tests. Please make sure you get them done for your own safety and peace of mind

Nothing like explaining over the phone in the middle of the open-plan office (for the third time) that I  don't require a PAP smear and I've spoken to the doctor about this and yes I am aware of all the recommendations and also that I do not meet the criteria within those recommendations and I've requested a note be put on my file more than once so I can stop getting these calls...

This isn't really about periods. But my friends were talking about smear tests today and they said I should have had one, however I'm not sure. I'm 19, never had sex, probably won't anytime soon since my love life is dead, should I be getting this test? It hasn't even crossed my mind until today. Thanks for any help!

Well over here in the UK you get an invitation for a smear test at the age of 25. After that it will be very 3 years until the age of 50 when it reduces to every 5 years.

Not being sexually active will mean that your need for a smear test should be lowered anyway :)

In the US I think the recommended age is 21 and every 2 years :)
