MPN- At a conference hosted by the Yesha Council yesterday, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich proposed that Israelis could "occupy Gaza and thin the population by half within two years."

Smotrich argued that this could be done at a relatively low cost, but even if the price were higher, Israel should be willing to pay it, calling this strategy the "only way forward."

Smotrich emphasised that this strategy, if successful in Gaza, could later be applied to the West Bank.

The US sanctions so far towards Netanyahu's government may seem fairly minor to some, but my sense is that these are warning shots- and they are ramping up, moving closer to the upper levels of government. A few individual settlers in the West Bank were sanctioned months back. Now an advisor to one of the most prominent figures in the government and the organization he heads have been sanctioned, and an entire battalion may soon follow. I wouldn't be surprised if the next step on the Biden Administration's part, assuming Netanyahu does not change course, is to directly sanction Ben-Gvir and/or Smotrich (IIRC sanctions against Smotrich were considered months ago, but passed over in favour of targeting less prominent persons).
