Fun Fangs Facts 4 !

Let's talk about the final type of fangs : solenoglyphous ! ⸜(｡˃ ᵕ ˂ )⸝

meaning : "pipe-grooved" ; those fangs can be compared to hypodermic needles, hollow-cored with a canal from the venom gland to the exit orifice on the front of the fang

what's very interesting about those fangs is the way that the fangs and skin surrounding it allow them to be folded against the roof of the mouth

except for one similar but specific family of snakes in Africa (atractaspidids), only vipers have such teeth

they inject the largest quantities of venom which, given the size of the fangs, not very surprising

the famous rattlesnake 🪇

exemple : the Gaboon viper is the snake with the longest fangs in the world, about 5 cm in length ! and also, logically, with the highest venom yield

lives in sub-Saharan Africa

females are usually bigger and heavier than males

while the venom is really quite dangerous if you get bitten, those snakes' behavior is usually sluggish and they rarely attack humans

the small blue viper (trimeresurus insularis) lives on south-east asian islands, and the species has an absolutely amazing range of colors, including actual, non-photoshopped blue hues
