Hi mom, I have a kind of weird thing to say. I love Erwin and I love the scene in the manga when he loses his arm, and I think it was animated beautifully. But I’ve been struggling because the anime removed Erwin’s roar of agony when it happens, which just snapped my suspension of disbelief and I couldn’t connect to him or the moment at all. When he shouts that Eren is just ahead and go without him, his expression is hardly different from pre-bite; other than the split-second when he's first 1/2
bit, it’s almost like he doesn’t feel pain at all, even as blood gushes from his arm. It made the moment feel like almost parody to me. It also bothers me because Erwin is often called ‘inhuman,’ and I think his pain, even if he screams for just a moment, is something that humanizes him, and it makes his determination even more badass. But my question is, why do you think they removed Erwin’s scream? And do you have any advice for me in how to get over it? Is there something that I’m missing?2/2
It’s interesting how we saw that panel so differently! I’d always thought the scream was from the soldier who was shouting for Erwin, not from Erwin himself. But looking at it now, there’s no way to be certain. Your interpretation is perfectly valid and the scene would’ve been very different in he’d screaming in agony.
I feel for you. It’s so disappointing when a moment we long cherished in the manga is changed in the anime. It’s happened to me a few times and there’s no fixing it. It’s a black mark on something that’s otherwise perfect. So i have no words of advice for you because I don’t deal with it well myself.
But I do think if they continue to follow the manga as they have, Erwin will have a humanizing moment. I’m looking forward to seeing Erwin reaching the wall and passing out tomorrow:
I’m also hopeful for a little Beardwin as well. His smile in the hospital bed is probably his first unguarded, totally human and completely spontaneous moment in the manga.
