do you think zeke losing xaver's glasses during his last confrontation with levi mean anything? i mean he has been solid about his plan on exterminating the eldian race when he still had the glasses, meaning that he was solidly on board with xaver's plan, but when he lost it his views started to waver as well, mostly because of his paths journey with eren, do you think it's metaphorical that he lost xaver's glasses?
Maybe.
I think the main purpose of the glasses was to provide an early hint of the connection between Zeke and the mystery man we first spotted hugging Zeke in 87, Fandom saw the similarity in the frames and immediately started rolling out the theories.
The glasses were mentioned again 25 chapter later, just before Tom Xaver was introduced. In case anyone forget the man in 87, Isayama wanted to remind us. He wanted to make sure we caught the hint.
Symbolically, it works too. It’s clear they share the same vision and the glasses were a fun representation of that. If Zeke’s vision changes or he wavers moving forward, the meta about the lost glasses practically writes itself :)
wouldnt there be technically a chance that eren is because we don't know where his mother came from?
This is a series where “never say never” is not just a Justin Bieber lyric :) I’d never say anything is “technically impossible” but for me, learning the identity of the Smiling Titan nailed the coffin closed on the “Eren Reiss” theory.
Prior to that, we could point to chapter 50 as evidence that Eren could use the Coordinate power unassisted, opening the possibility of a Reiss connection. Meeting Dina Fritz in chapter 87, and seeing the effect Historia’s touch had on him in chapter 90 provide strong evidence Eren is not a Reiss.
Hi, so this might be a morbid question. Did all of the Eldian restorationists get their fingers chopped off? Or just Grisha? Also, did all of the mindless Titans outside the walls used to be humans? Who were turned by the Marley? Thanks.
Glancing through chapter 87, it looks likely. Grisha, Dina and Grice are all drawn with bandaged, bloody hands.
I suspect the reason for the torture was twofold. The Marleyans were eager to discover information about the Owl and torture was one way to do that. But I also think they might be looking for the missing titan and a traumatic injury would force a transformation.
Looking at the photos of Ymir’s transformation, the hands are obscured so there’s no telling if it was a routine procedure or something reserved only people actively working against the Marley government.
Resources p1. So the marleyians need resources, and they want the resources of the Eldians specifically, which means they either can't find other places for resources or this is 'easier'. They haven't directly bothered the Eldians for 100 years until they needed resources, so they want to use the resources for something else than getting rid of the Eldians, because they would use the coordinate to destroy Eldians in order to get the resources
Does this mean they need the resources for something else? It could be personal luxury, but wouldn’t it be too risky to fight Eldians still with the coordinate for personal luxury? wouldn’t they try to find resources somewhere else, unless it is not possible? What if they need resources for warfare against another different group?
Because if they need to go to war with a different group/people/culture, they need to preserve the war industry. What if they only want to destroy the eldians to get to the resources to preserve war industry so they can battle against a different group? Or I didn’t understand the facts… But I do not believe that the Marleyans and Eldians (and perhaps Asian clan) are the only 3 ‘groups’ in the world.
Kudos on using the word “resources” ten times in an ask :D
I’m reading this and chucking because the whole thing about Marley needing Paradis for its resources is completely preposterous to me. It would mean that Marley has explored the island and has the technology to determine what resources actually exist. I mean, I guess if they need a bunch of “big ass trees”, Paradis is the place but I can’t imagine they have technology to determine any underground resources.
As a plot point, I think it’s one of the weakest yet. And like you said, it would mean that the Shingeki universe is indeed a very small one.
EDIT: Ooops I just saw the part three! It changes the question slightly so I’ve added it in.
Hello! There's something I've been wondering about. Sergeant Gross told Grisha that only Eldians can be turned into titans. If that's the case, then how do you think Marley obtained the titan shifters during the war against Eldia? It probably would have been difficult to convince 7 trustworthy Eldians to take on the curse, fight the war for Marley against their own people, and become second-class citizens under Marley. Is it more likely to be propaganda that only Eldians can become titans?
I’ve wondered this myself. The idea that the Marleyans captured seven titans shifters using conventional methods of warfare is hard to fathom. I’m very open to the idea that everything we’ve learned from the Marleyans is a blend of half-truth and propaganda. I’m also open to the idea that the 9th titan was somehow involved.
Regardless of favorite character or personal preference, the vast majority seem to agree that Eren and Mikasa could not escape consequences for what happened on the roof. I was happy to see this kind of agreement in the fandom, especially after such a contentious few months.
The most common sentiment was this one:
They needed to be punished for disobeying military rules and putting them in a detention cell was enough to show what they did was unacceptable without being too harsh.
They have fluffy beds and their best friend is nearby. It’s not a bad gig. There was plenty of sympathy for Eren and Mikasa. Most people understand the strong emotions that motivated their rebellion. Many worry about Eren’s mental state. Their age, and also their special abilities were cited more than once as factor’s for leniency.
But there was still plenty of anger--many people calling for court martial and beyond.
Did they said sorry after that? no? Did they said thank you after levi saved armin? no? Did they show any sign of sadness over the death of their commander, or giving condolences to levi or hange over their losses? no.
In fairness, we don’t know yet. Maybe we’ll see true remorse in a coming chapter.
Several people thought the punishment would be better if it was more constructive. Staying in a cell is a waste of time when there is so much to do. One suggested community service and another thought they should be put to work making potato lamps :P
I added this question after the first 150 entries were already submitted, so these results are a much smaller subset than the poll in general, but I’d heard rumblings that some in the fandom thought Levi should be punished. I needed confirmation on this.
I'm confused. There are people pushing for Levi's punishment. For what?
My question exactly! For those who thought he should face punishment, very few gave reason why. Here are the once I saw:
“He most certainly shouldn't be given any more special decision making privileges.”
“I think he should be held accountable for punching Eren. I think that was way out of line, given his authority & strength”
"I want Kruger kun to push me off the wall. He's so dreamy it hurts to live"
“Erwin is hotter”
Indeed. :(
(I can’t believe Mikasa’s bed head lost to the jokes about Grisha’s penis. Seriously, what is wrong with you people 😂)
I probably should’ve included more options in this question. People wrote in the reveal of Dina as the Smiling Titan, the “I am the Owl” moment and one especially smart and perceptive person listed “krutaku” was the best chapter moment <- that’s mine and kruger’s ship name <3 let me kiss you anon!
“Ti(tan)tanic! (you know, the ship torn in half by a titan? you get it right? ...no?”)
“Dina being revealed as the smiling titan: making the whole beginning of this damn series tragically, ironically hilarious”
Baby Zeke was also a popular write-in comment:
“I really liked reading Grisha's thoughts on Zeke after the boy turned them in. It's heartbreaking, in a way. There is no way you cannot feel pity for everyone, including someone like Zeke.”
Again, I modified this question once the poll was well underway so the results are in no way accurate. I will include this on every future poll.
I suspected the majority of people who follow my blog were partial to the vets, but I wanted confirmation of this. I also wanted to be able to segment the data based on character preference. Interestingly, there was no real difference in the answers regardless of which group was favorited.
Final comments
“Where is Levi” was the answer I saw most. It became something of a meme in recent weeks, so I wasn’t surprised. I laughed at this comment because it sums it up so well
“(Obligatory mention of Erwin Smith and "Where is Levi?" salt.)”
Impatience also rules the day. Many appreciate The Grisha Files but are increasingly ready to move on and get back to our main cast. I’m in the minority of those who hope the information dump continues for awhile longer.
I’ll conclude with this, because I don’t think it can be minimized how much of a game changer the last two chapters have been:
“I feel like there is a distinct tone shift in the series now. I no longer feel the visceral threat of being up against an impossible unknown enemy, and that most of the mysteries have been uncovered. Now the story feels like a humanist war epic, rather than the previous apocalyptic humanity on brink of extinction. If the Elodians were to be extinguished, then humanity would still live on... So the stakes feel lower for me.”
Thank you again to the 250+ people who participated! As I said, I may make this a regular thing. My tag will be “snk poll” if you want to track it.
But please know that by no means do I think I have a market on this. I know other sites and groups do polls. I do not consider myself an authority in this fandom, I do not “have a leadership role”, whatever that even is. I'm just a curious fan who wants to know what others think and I can use this platform to satisfy that curiosity. My questions are very much slanted to the things I personally am most interested in (*cough hot kruger cough*), so if anyone else is currently doing, or would like to do polls, please know you have my blessing and support. Not that you need it, of course :)
