whumpee whose role often gets them involved in very intense and maybe even supernatural/superhuman situations (e.g. they're a superhero, they're a top secret government spy, their world has a magic system, etc. etc.) who really struggles to process what they see as "mundane" suffering.
the "special" whump that comes with their role--like being kidnapped by supervillains or dangled over an active volcano or trapped in a hall of haunted mirrors--is difficult to handle, but people understand it and they have a support system. what about their abusive relationship? what about their ex-partner, who never held them in a ball of magical lightning or anything, but who used to hit them when they spent money without asking? that's not special. sure, whumpee had to go to the hospital a few times in that relationship, but they don't even count that because they've been to the hospital for much more bizarre, outlandish things than a broken wrist. it would be silly to need comfort for something as "ordinary" as the fact that their partner stopped asking permission for sex after a while.
oh that hits so, SO hard. this ‘normal’ kind of pain just not warranting attention or care or comfort or help. hiding that and even blaming the injuries on the supernatural stuff. the others maybe assuming trauma responses related to the abuse is about something else, something they already know about. they have a support system. but their support system doesn’t know about this threat in their personal life. in their family. in their own home.
and the phrasing of ‘their partner stopped asking permission for sex after a while’ has me like. riveted. the dismissiveness of how they see what’s happening to them. they’re not being raped, their partner is just… taking sex. so what if they’re sleeping, or already hurt from their intense/superhuman situations, or they just don’t want it.
the presence of a support system is just so devastating. people who care, who look after them, who they look out for and support in turn. and like… maybe sometimes with the ‘normal’ stuff. the ‘not special’ stuff. the abuse. maybe they lean in a bit to the damage sustained in a fight with a supervillain because they just need some comfort, some care. it didn’t hurt that bad this time but maybe they let the others believe it did, and they hate themself for it.

I LOVE Goliath Returns explicitly for Garthe’s performance. So much of this episode is gold and I LOVE how well played Garthe was and the meta I derived from it. So. Meta time! Garthe is so expressive but also subtle in his character. So let’s look at how affected Garthe becomes acknowledging Michael within this episode.
Adrianne Margeaux greets Devon and April after their capture from Knight Mansion, but is apt to point out how “disappointed” she is to see “Michael is not with” them. Adrianne then jabs at “what a small world” they have that they all share a “[friendship]” with Garthe. Devon is quick to point out they have no such bond. Garthe of course looks with casual disdain at Devon (shown above). Cool. Still not too much to gather outside what we would expect.
Then we get this:
“Poor Garthe, people say such nasty things about him,” Adrianne says. And for once Garthe is openly showing his hurt.
“But such good things about Michael,” Adrianne adds. And Garthe looks at Devon as if accusingly.
But he recovers to regard Adrianne again. But she makes a point. “I’m beginning to wonder if he is really flesh and blood.” Before adding a VERY telling statement: “I look forward to finding out.”
This is the first obvious fissure in this fragile alliance between Adrianne and Garthe. Look how he knows the implication of her desire for Michael here. She is using Garthe as he is her. But with her it is also very personal in her sexual exploiting and hopes to capture and claim Michael as her own. Garthe is just her toy in the meantime. Nvm she is really the one being played.
But, Garthe is the original. The whole episode plays harder on this concept than his first appearance in Goliath. He is the original, the true heir to Wilton’s legacy by blood, the real son. And he is seen as the copy, the shadow to Michael Knight. A man who not only has his inheritance, but his own familial namesake. Who stole his very face! Even once she is pushed and enraged, Adrianne accuses Garthe of being a fake.
