Sobriety Matters... turned 4 today! Sober Birthday 02/15/12
Today I am celebrating 4 years sober! As soon as I woke up, I started weeping. Weird, right?! Not really...these were tears of happiness, water that purifies, the kind of cry you have when you are overwhelmed by knowing that surrendering to God daily gives me everything I need to stay clean and sober.
Life is so much better sober, I can no longer imagine it any other way. There are times, still, that a glass of wine calls my name. I just look at it and say, “No thanks, I don’t love you any more.”!
If it is wrong, fight it. If it is right, fight for it...because Sobriety Matters.
Today, I have been sober for 47 months. This tumbler was started as a way to share my struggles and successes in sobriety, because it matters.
For those just beginning the journey into living a life that is clean and sober, let me encourage you by saying there is nothing more satisfying than to wake up every morning knowing you are quite able and very capable of slaying the dragons you encounter throughout the day.
When I poured those last drops of poison (my poison of choice was wine and whiskey) down my throat in February of 2012, I just knew that I would never again have any fun at all because I was choosing to lay down the one thing that I thought I could always count on, the one best friend that I thought would never hurt me.
As the months progressed and the fog of drunkenness lifted, I came to realize that alcohol was NEVER my friend; alcohol was a back-stabbing enemy.
The stores that sell liquor often have signs that read, “Wine & Spirits”. The problem is, they don’t tell you what kind of “Spirits”. I assure you, they are not the good kind!
So, next month, I will celebrate FOUR years sober. I have had more fun in the last four years than I did in the entire 38 years of drinking. The Spirit that is now upon me is not evil at all, it is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. My sleep is better, food is better, health is all around better, I have more spiritually, financially, morally and life in general is just peachy.
The best part of being sober is that tomorrow, I will actually remember typing this. Stay strong. Stay vigilante. Put on your armor and get to slaying!
