Growing amongst the architectural Dicksonia antarctica (soft tree fern) are the yellow flowers of Ligularia 'The Rocket' (leopard plant). This clump forming herbaceous perennial has strongly toothed, heart-shaped leaves and the tall flower spikes with small yellow flowers on contrasting black stems. The plant needs a damp location whilst receiving full sun, so ideal for a bog garden or stream side planting.

The cool and moist environment of the Attadale Gardens, Wester Ross, Scotland, is ideal for growing ferns. They are displayed in an old quarry and a sunken fern garden with a geodesic dome glasshouse for treasures that need more protection. Under the canopy of deciduous trees the Dicksonia antarctica (tree fern, soft tree fern) plants provide height and unity for this large collection of fern species.

The Dicksonia antarctica (soft tree fern, Australian tree fern) was looking great in the Temperate House of the Royal Botanic Garden Kew, London. One of these tree ferns trunks was covered with Soleirolia soleirolii (mind-your-own-business, baby’s tears) which to me looked like it was a green dinosaur’s body. This evergreen fern can be deciduous in colder areas, growing slowly up to 4m in height, with a terminal rosette of arching fronds. Unless in a milder climatic area the crown of the fern will need winter protection, but these specimens were thriving in the protection of this amazing glasshouse.

At Provender Nursery, Kent, UK, the Dicksonia antarctica (soft tree fern) were coming into leaf after their importation from Australia. It is vital to ensure plants are legally harvested and exported by checking they have an environmental tag with a serial number. This is an evergreen tree fern, but becomes deciduous in colder areas. The erect, trunk-like rhizome is clothed in fibrous roots so in hot, dry summers water the stem but avoid allowing water in the crown of the plant in winter.

In the shaded, damp atmosphere of the woodland garden are Dicksonia antarctica (soft tree fern, Australian tree fern, woolly tree fern). This evergreen tree fern is deciduous in colder areas and grows slowly up to 4m in height. The glossy, dark green fronds reach 3m in length. The crown (growing point) of the fern need winter protection in colder climates.
