It's Ghost that notices first, and understands best, what's happening to Johnny.

A shift- in personality, in bearing, in aura- that happens when the orders come in and the mission begins.

Serious. Focused. Sharp.

Not to say that Johnny hadn't been these things, before. Nor to say that these weren't good traits to have, especially for the work they do. It is simply that Johnny becomes these things a bit more, as time goes on.

But Ghost can see, too, how Johnny becomes less at the same time. Less joking. Less spirited. Less happy.

Gaz and Price notice too, of course. How their Sunshine seems to be fading, just a bit each time they brief a new mission, every time they gear up for infil.

But they don't see it the same way that Ghost does. Because they haven't lived it like Ghost has.

Ghost was created to protect Simon. Born in the blood and agony of a man who simply couldn't take it anymore. And Ghost is there to protect Simon til the end of their days.

And while what is happening to Johnny isn't beat-for-beat the same bloody, screaming destruction that created Ghost, it's still a separation born from the necessity of protection.

Soap and Johnny.

Soap, the protector, and Johnny, the protected.

Soap, as Ghost, and Johnny, as Simon.

Simon never wanted this to happen to Johnny. Never wanted Johnny to be "just like [him] when [he] grows up", like Johnny half-jokingly claimed in Las Almas.

But Ghost can't protect Johnny. No matter how hard he tries.

And sometimes, when they watch their Sunshine hide behind his protective cloud, Ghost feels like he's failed to protect Simon too.
