Getting ready for the @camlannpod live show on the 7th September by building the sound design on this baby. (image description: a Roland SP404 MkII sampler with a colourful Legend of Zelda faceplate sits on a messy desk. The buttons are lit up and the Tin Can Audio logo can be seen on the small circular LCD screen at the top of the box)
I've run live shows on things like QLab before but I found it very rigid and unintuitive and, while I do think using a sampler is maybe making it harder than it needs to be, in practice it feels a bit more fluid and I can adjust to what to actors are doing in real time with things like volume fades and music cues.
I also just really love making stuff with this! The piece I made for Short Cuts was put together by loading the archival samples and my interview tape onto the sampler and figuring out the script audibly rather than on paper, which felt a lot more freeing and more my tempo.
There's also this piece, which I still think is one of the better things I've made:
It's been fun building a Camlann episode ahead of the show. As always it's a joy to work with Ella's script and realising we're sort of going against convention once again when it comes to what a podcast live show can be, which is all I'll say for now. Come see us perform Camlann in front of your faces (but I'll be at the back of the room so I'll be...behind your faces I guess)
