Some Space Gaming Resources
First, a small resource.
Journal of the Traveller’s Aid Society/Challenge was GDW’s house magazine. Besides official supplements for Traveller, Space: 1889, Twilight: 2000, 2300, and others, it had unofficial adventures and variants for Star Wars, Warhammer 40,000, Shadowrun, Cyberpunk 20.20, and others. Including Sunstroke with the Little Sisters of Purification in issue 36.
Journal of the Travellers’ Aid Society was later revived by SJG.
There’s a free index, and single issues on DriveThroughRpg:

Second, a bigger Kickstarter.
They’re publishing a collection of Loren Wiseman’s editorials, and at the higher price ranges, the full run of Journal of the Travellers’ Aid Society/Challenge.

Now I’m not much of a Traveller fan. I prefer to play custom-created characters instead of randomly-generated ones, and I want to be able to play disabled characters. But Traveller has some nice resources, not included here, for planet generation and technology design. And Challenge has a lot of odd resources you might be able to adapt to your preferred settings and systems.
FTL: Faster Than Light - Roguelike at it's best.
Not enough can be said about the Roguelike FTL.
I've invested over 100 hours in the game and I never even got to play the Beta. I'm not sure if it's an addiction or due to the fact that even after 100 hours of gameplay, I'm still finding new ships and missions that I've never seen before. It's actually one of the few games I feel compelled to grab all the achievements for.
Now I know what you're thinking. 100 hours in and STILL not all the ships are unlocked??? Perhaps I just have bad luck, or similar luck is all. Who knows, but regardless, I'm still enjoying myself. Whether it's on Normal (which btw, is really freaking hard) or Easy mode, the game ALWAYS presents a challenge. And that's wherein lies my addiction.
It's sad how much I like to watch them burn.
So yeah, I've used a lot of time up, but I can say this, FTL is one of my favorite games of late 2012 and early 2013. It can be played anywhere due to the lack of strain in the graphics card department and it's still entertaining. It's an indie game and one of the first by this particular developer.
FTL <---------The devs website and where you can purchase the game directly if you do not wish to do so through Steam.
And the game itself isn't that expensive. I mean, it's ALWAYS going on sale for $5.00 or you can purchase it now for $10. Now if you have enough Scrap Recovery Arms, you may be able to get the game cheaper. In-game joke.. .Sorry, I've been on a long hiatus.. I'm cheesy, I know. Either way I feel the challenge and the game is worth it.
Now I don't want to spoil much of the game for you. But basics.... you are going to the aid of others and this game eventually shows what type of captain you would be in the most dire of situations. Want to be Malcolm Reynolds? Done, name your ship and crew and Boom! You're him. Oh did I mention there are Mods? No? I will later. Anyways, this game shows that is has a lot of potential for Roleplaying.
For example:
Me.... I'm probably a great captain but terribly evil when in dire situations. I have no problem venting an entire area of oxygen and losing one crew member to save 4 or 5 due to massive fire breach. It's just how I think.
Also, I constantly upgrade doors to level 3 and when boarded I suffocate the enemy in my own ship. I'm pretty sick like that. When fighting enemy ships, I like to set them on fire and watch them burn and suffocate. I'm not sure what this says about me as a person... Scary, right?
Boarding parties? Yeah, I do that crap too. I hire two Mantis crew and BEEFCAKE those boys up so when I teleport them in someone, they beat the shit out of everyone and leave nearly unscathed.
I mean, these are just a few of the things you can do to give you an idea of the trials you will face in this game. I mean, shit, I've shot missiles at ships and hit their drones attacking me by accident... That kind of attention to detail in a game is REALLY impressive and nice to have for once.
This is only small things I've listed too. You can unlock new ships, have numerous missions and distress calls in game to accomplish and can even MOD, yes, they've started MODDING this game.
Okay, I mentioned Captain Reynolds. Well, you can Mod in the Firefly model ship... don't like that one enough to do it? Fine, how about the SS Enterprise? Or the Star Destroyer from Star Wars. THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING!
Boba Fett ship incoming? Anyone? Most definitely, I'm sure.
So if you have time at work to burn. Or you want to play while on the plane on your laptop or something, then please, pick up this game.
You'll be frustrated, angry, rewarded, excited, all those emotions and more bundled up when you play through FTL several 100 times.
Like I said, I have over 100 hours in the game and I'm not tired of it yet. Don't let me spoil the game by telling you what it's all about and how pretty it may be, or how long it is... Just have a go at it and decide for yourself. And when you find yourself engulfed in FTL's atmosphere, then you can thank me. Until then....I actually have some time to spare..
I think i'm going to give it another go now. Cheers!
