Oh, what a good question!!!  Hmm, the short answer is: it depends on the character and the story I’m telling.

The longer answer is more complicated.  I’ve tried a bit of everything over the years, and I’ve found that certain types of stories do better with specific povs.  (And I’m no expert on this by any means - I was a history major, not an English one, so forgive me if I get my terms mixed up!)  

At the moment, I’ve been inspired by @swaps55 to experiment with third person/present pov for Caleb Shepard.  It’s taking a little while to get used to, and I’m sure some of my first attempts are overly simplified because of that, but I think I like it.  A LOT.  With each piece I write for him, it becomes more and more comfortable.  Now that said, I did experiment with it a little for certain ‘dream’ sequences in a couple of other fics, mostly to delineate between the current day in the story and the dream itself.  I also discovered just how confusing it can be to switch back and forth between the two!!!!

Now, that said, I have some original fiction I’ve been working on that I use first person/present for.  It’s a bit more restrictive, but that works well for the story because it makes filtering just how much information the reader receives easier.  Maybe one of these days I’ll actually get it published and get feedback on how well that works.  *shrug*  I like it, but I don’t use it quite so much.

Up until recently, however, I was strictly third person/past tense - it’s what I knew, it’s what I’m most comfortable with.  Chances are I’ll go back to it most times because of that familiarity, and I’m not opposed to that.

See I’m wondering that too. Because they brought up in the original post about having shoes for guests and I’m like who has money?? for other shoes?? in various sizes?? for guests??

And at the same time it’s been noted that lower incomes tend to be more giving and forgiving when it comes to their guests. So maybe. That would be something interesting to do a legitimate study on.

I have also noticed that lower income families have started to act more like the structure of foreign families. Like the idea of children living with their families for longer periods of time which is something good in non-american cultures and has started to become kind of accepted (based on just economy) now? All very interesting tbh.
