Are Fentanyl-Meth Deaths in Indiana Due to Contamination, or “Speedballing”?

Marion County, Indiana is seeing a troubling rise in deaths related to methamphetamine combined with fentanyl, according to the Indiana University Public Policy Institute. Between 2017-2018, deaths caused by fentanyl in the county increased 5 percent, and deaths caused by methamphetamine increased 4 percent; a startling 58 percent of all drug-related deaths last year involved fentanyl and methamphetamine combined. This was while overall overdose deaths declined by 11 percent in the state.

In this context, researchers still don’t know whether people are primarily knowingly combining fentanyl and methamphetamine as “speedballs,” or if the drugs they purchase are adulterated without their knowledge.

“We don’t have a good answer yet,” said Bradley Ray, director of Wayne State University’s Center for Behavioral Health and Justice. “We don’t know how often fentanyl is being mixed with methamphetamine, or if people are intentionally taking both drugs together.”

Different types of speedballs

Let's see, I've shot coke and dope, the classic speedball, and a modified one I suppose being crack and dope.
