How to Cast a Circle
Casting a circle is one of the most important parts of any magical spell or ritual. This helps create a sacred space for you to conduct your spell uninterrupted by unwanted spiritual forces while welcoming in those entities we do want. There are many ways to do this, but I’ve found this method to be most effective for me.
You will need:
one yellow candle
one blue candle
one red candle
one green candle
one purple candle
five candle holders
a lighter or matches
First, try to find a room or space where you will be uninterrupted by people and distractions, and will have enough room for the circle and the spell. Remember, once you cast the circle you cannot leave until the circle is properly closed, so make sure you have everything you need for the spell with you.
Next, place the candles in their holders and in the appropriate positions according to the elements and their directions (to the best of your ability). Yellow in the west for air, red in the south for fire, blue in the west for water, green in the north for earth, and purple in the center for spirit.
Next, you should cleanse the space before lighting the candles and actually casting the circle. You can do this with sage, Florida water, selenite, or a cleansing mixture of your choice.
Next, you need to declare your intention to cast a magical circle. Use a wand, athame, or your forefinger and move clockwise beginning in the east. Channel the energy of the earth through your feet and into your forefinger and say: “I conjure thee, o circle of power, that thou be a boundary and a protection for this space between the worlds.” If this feels too old fashioned and unnatural there is no problem with modernizing the words, as long as the intent remains.
Now it is time to invoke the elements. Beginning in the east with the yellow candle, light the candle and say something to the effect of: “In the east, the element of air, you are honored in this sacred circle. Hail and welcome.” Repeat this with each element turning clockwise from yellow to red and so on until you end with purple/spirit.
You have now cast a magical circle and welcomed the elements to join you in your task! Carry out the spell and when you are finished blow out the candles in reverse order, beginning with earth and moving to water and ending with spirit.
Every witch has their own way of doing things so do not feel afraid to make adjustments if it feels right for you. I am an earthy witch so I sometimes like to include crystals in my circle casting.
Have fun and be safe casting!!
How to cast a magic circle
You will need:
- four, eight or twelve (,...) small white candles (tealights are fine)
- a hazelnut twig, a knife, a feather or incense (Air)
- another small candle in white or red (Fire)
- a container with water (Water, obviously)
- some soil, salt or sand (Earth)
How to:
Put the candles in a circle and place the object representing each element in the corresponding corner inside the circle of candles ( Air = East, Fire = South, Water = West, Earth = North). Be sure not to enter the circle while doing this. When you have finished, you can enter the circle from the East. Sit down in the middle, start with East and speak a little prayer asking the element to support, bless and protect you during this ritual and light the corresponding candle afterwards. Continue clockwise until you sit facing the East again. You can now do whatever spell you want. Be sure not to leave the circle anymore after it has been closed. ( So keep all you need for your spell inside the circle before you cast it.) Once you're finished, you have to open the circle again. Start with East again, thank the element for their help and release them by blowing out the candle. This time you continue counter clockwise. Once you have blown out the "fire" candle, the circle has been opened again. You can leave it from the East now and tidy up the ingredients without entering the circle again as long as it is set up.
"This isn’t super witch specific but clear your head before spells/readings by closing your eyes and doing deep measured breaths, sway your body a bit if you need to, whatever it takes to align your energies & get your focus"

A Guide to Spellcasting
Since I’m getting close to 550 subscribers and didn’t do anything special for 500, I decided to do something that’s been on my mind for a while: a guide to spellcasting in general!
Now, you should know that spellcasting begins before you light a single candle. It’s best to have a process you go through before every spell: you should wash yourself, preferably in a purifying herbal bath (though it doesn’t have to be); turn off the artificial lights, if you have to cast indoors; and meditate a bit to prepare yourself. I personally also like to do qigong before my spells, and I plan on linking videos to help you all get started on that!
You can also have some herbal tea, or play some music to get you focused on your task. Do whatever works for you, so long as it gets you in the Zone for casting your spell! Some like to fast before casting a spell, but I’ve read conflicting information on that. If you feel, personally, like it helps or hinders your spellcasting, then go with what feels right to you, and not what someone else decrees.
Additionally, it would behoove you to purify and safeguard a space before casting. If you worry that there may be unwanted energies in the space you’ll be casting, you can try smudging or burning incense, and erecting a circle to keep any spirits or other undesirable influences out. I’d also recommend having a dedicated space for spellcasting, like a spot in the garden or a room no one else goes to, and populating it with items that will enhance your spell (and hopefully bring some good feng shui).
You should also take some time to familiarize yourself with your spell items and attune them to the task that lies ahead. Whether it’s a crystal, an herb, or a candle, you should hold the object in your hand (after it’s been cleared of unwanted energy), then focus your energies and your intentions into it. Visualize what it is you’ll need, and visualize it as having already happened.
Next, while casting the spell, there are certain things you can do to improve its effect. Maintain privacy while you’re spellcasting: no children, pets, family members, or anyone else should intrude on your space. Incantations are also useful, as are magical formulae, mantras, and gestures that help you to concentrate your energies on the spell.
After spellcasting, you might need some time to recharge. I personally recommend listening or playing to music, looking at or making art, drinking tea, eating some nutritious food, and things like that. I’ve found that making or consuming art especially helps me to recharge!
Additionally, depending on the type of spell, you may want to purify your space and your house in general. Some spells will require you to dispose of candle remains outside of your house, or do some smudging or other tasks intended to purify the space. Make sure you practice safe spellcasting!
I hope this has been helpful to all of you. I’m sorry for not posting much lately, I’ve kind of been in a dither these past few weeks! There’s a spell I’ve been working on that’s occupied a lot of my time and energy. I’m going to start posting more again soon, though!
