Promotional postcard for the indie pop compilation CD One Last Kiss, released in 1992 by U.S indie label spinART.
This compilation was both the culmination of local (mostly east coast U.S.) indie pop scenes that had been bubbling up for some time as well as the starting gun for American indie pop as a culture club and identity. And as the debut release from a little label in Pennsylvania, it sure put spinArt on the map with a bang.
I was primed for this compilation when it landed. Incite! zine editor Tim Alborn’s invite in 1989 to an eye-opening, DIY indie show at Harvard led to my buying records on his new label, Harriet Records. My eyes were further opened by zines, which wrote about bands on labels like Slumberland and Bus Stop. And I ended up seeing many of those bands live, whether opening for Heavenly in Boston the summer of 1991 or later that year as part of my whirlwind tour of NYC rock clubs my freshman year of college.
Which is to say: I naturally loved this on first listen! Sure, not every band contributed their best tune (sorry, Small Factory). But others gave what are arguably their top tunes, including Velocity Girl and Magnetic Fields.
My memory of spinART was jogged rather suddenly just a couple of months ago, when a friend retweeted label honcho Jeff Price giving away some of the CDs from his onetime label. A great offer, even though one thing was missing from that collection: One Last Kiss.
