Yet another Byler story has been taken down because people cannot understand fandom etiquette or, at this point, how to be a normal fucking person.
‘Spit Swear’, a ryers story, has been taken down due to doxxing and rape threats as well as general harassment and stalking. ‘Sweetbunny22’ has been gone for a while and ‘The Polaroid’ was also gone at one point. We are losing authors and fandom history due to the most stupid shit possible.
What happens when all the most popular fics are gone? What happens when authors are too scared to post in fear of harassment? Then there will be nothing to read. And it’ll all be the fault of the people who can’t get a grip on the fact that this is how fandoms are. Filled with smut and unique rarepairs. It has always been this way and it will continue to be so. That’s just a cold hard fact.
No other fandom is like this. Rarepairs and explicit fics are more than normal. The It fandom, especially Reddie fics, were filled to the brim with explicit fics and smut and no one batted an eye. Why? Because people in that fandom are NORMAL. Dont get me wrong, we’re all freaks, but even we have a code of conduct and a way that is normal to us. This is how fandom and fanfic works! If you don’t like something or think it’s gross, that’s YOUR problem! Not the authors. They have the right to post whatever they want and not have to worry about being harassed for it.
There is no moral high ground here. There’s no protecting anyone for the scary words in a fanfic. Humans have been writing both normal AND weird sexual shit for forever. People would have an aneurism if they read a V.C. Andrews or Clive Barker novel. You think it’s disgusting? That’s on you. You can cry about it alone in your room and leave everyone else be.
I am a sex repulsed Ace person and probably the biggest prude on the planet. I am in the ‘do NOT touch me’ category when it comes to anything related to intimacy. But what I personally like, don’t like, and morals I have do never and will never impact the creativity of others. I would never even DREAM of saying shit to someone because their story has shit I don’t like in it. It’s not my story and it’s not my space, so I don’t engage with them.
Everyone who thinks it’s okay to harass someone over fanfiction is a child and a bad fucking person. Literally leave fandom spaces, all of them. You don’t belong here. If you don’t like something, DON’T READ IT. You don’t look like a hero for harassing the creator of an explicit fic, you look a fucking idiot.
I’m sorry for being so volatile but this is the last straw. The fandom is actively being hurt by people who don’t know how to conduct themselves. Go to the Marvel fandom, the It fandom, any anime fandom, or god forbid the H*rry P*tter fandom and tell me what you see there. Your jaw will be on the floor at some of the tags you see. Then maybe you’ll understand how fandom works and how normal it all is.
I’m extremely disappointed in the byler community and I want to personally apologize to @poorlittlegreenie13 for what had happened. I never had the honor of reading your story because, oddly enough, I’m just not a huge Ryers fan, lol. Funny how people don’t have to read a fic if they don’t vibe with it. However, I have no doubt your fic was wonderful due to how people loved it. I saw that you said you may put the story back up one day and I sincerely hope you do, but I understand if you don’t as well.
No one deserves any sort of harassment over fanfiction.
Edit: Forget to add in my obligatory mention that it’s okay and normal to be morally against certain things in fiction. You don’t have to like everything; I don’t like everything and there’s tons of content I don’t engage with and am personally against. We can have discussions all day on morality, but that does not change the fact that literature is the one place people can discuss taboo topics safely. To censor it is a very slippery slope. The fact of the matter is that people do have a right to talk about things that you may not like in fiction. It’s not up for debate, it’s something they can do.
You may not like it, you’re not obligated to. There’s tags I wish I had never seen because the sight of them makes me want to bleach my eyes. BUT I don’t have the right to harass that person and I’d be in the wrong to do so.
That’s just the truth of the matter.
