Oh hold up, «splashed white» in horses has atleast 2 completly different mutations responsible for it? I learned it innitially as mostly one thing with intermediate/incomplete dominant inheritance. Damn.

No, splashed white has at least two completely different genes responsible for it; and on top of that both of these genes have several identified mutations!

SW1, 3, and 5 to 9 are MITF mutations (plus there's macchiato, which is basically another splashed white allele), and SW2, 4 and 10 are PAX3 mutations.

Medium/high white splashed horses often have mutations on both of these genes.

Splashed white is one of those patterns that seems simple at first, but gets increasingly complicated the more you look into it.

this is henry! as a foal vs now. do you think hes gray or is there something else going on? (base coat is bay im p sure)

Yeah I think he's grey and also tobiano and probably splashed white with that bald face and blue eye. He looks black-based to me in that picture but I know foal coats and lighting etc can be deceiving so if you've seen him in person and you say he's bay I believe you.

Bay splashed white - E/_ A/_ SW/_ Maybe SW1, as it's the most common and perhaps the oldest. Anyway, splashed white has been around a long time.
