This scene in 12x06 Ladies Drink Free still breaks me. The moments of extreme stress where Dean gentles, offering care and physical touch to those he’s most worried about, yeah that’s the stuff.

mary winchester and jody mills in 12x06, celebrating the life of asa fox
This one ALWAYS gets me. Dean is trying so hard to be friendly. But try as he might, he's so off balance!
Dean introduces himself and is trying to do small talk.
DEAN: "I never met [Asa] but I've heard some crazy stories."
//
DUDE: "Yeah. Like what?"
And like, this guy has somethin' to hide. He's defensive. But Dean is just... thrown for a rude, ugly loop here. This guy is testing him. (A very "Are you talking out your ass, outsider?" vibe.)
///
Then Dean gives an example of a story and everyone erupts into easy comradery, shouting about their drinking game. "Hey! Our FAMOUS friend said the magic word! Drink, everybody!" (clapping)
But even that reads passive-aggressive. Famous friend.
And Dean?
Dean looks like a spooked horse.
He tentatively says it again, and they shout louder.
He gets the (correct) sense he's a biiit the butt of a joke.
It's awkward.
So, he smiles tightly and tries to play along. "Okay. Didn't know the rules."
Then it gets MEAN.
DUDE: "If you think the stories about Asa are crazy, you should hear what they say about you."
....
.........................
Fora guy that has all that Hell trauma, and all the demon trauma. It's just... :(
///
I wish Cas were there with him... :( The unsocialized angel has such a strange stabilizing presence for Dean, even and perhaps especially in social situations like this.
Meanwhile Sam is fending off fanboys:
MARY: "Everywhere I go and everything I do just… feels wrong." SAM: "You don't have to explain anything."

OK BUT HAS ANYONE CLOCKED how in 12.06 when sam, mary, and the other hunters were trapped in that house with a demon, dean was outside, stressed out of his mind—and then billie pops up all ominous like "someone's gonna die in there"—and this man’s first reaction was just "SAMMY??????" 😭😭😭
he IMMEDIATELY starts pounding on the door, full-on yelling sam’s name like his life depends on it. billie finally yeets him inside, and the very first thing out of his mouth?? "where is my brother?" NOT “is everyone okay?” NOT “where’s mom?” just "WHERE. IS. MY. BROTHER." 😭 like be fr man
LMAO, his actual mother is in there too, but did he call out for her? not even once bro. mary who??? never heard of her i guees.
Sam lived to tell. 😭 And with that: Good night
I still despise 12x06 btw
Why should I care or cry over that Asa Fox when Tamara, Gordon and Dean exist? He chose to enter the life (and was the hunter caricature everyone wants to see in Dean). Even John and Krissy's dad are more sympathetic.
