Supernatural 14.16 | Don't Go in the Woods
There's something about Jack, socialised almost entirely through hunters and the Winchesters, who hangs out with normal teenagers for the first time and his frame of reference for anything is Dean Winchester, Dean watches the Lost Boys, Dean listens to classic rock, Dean said this, Dean does that, Sam and Cas don't even get a mention, they don't talk about music or movies with him, that's Dean
“Oh! Sam said naked PEOPLE, not naked WOMEN: he’s such a good ally ☺️”
HE WAS THE ORIGINAL QUEERCODED WINCHESTER!!!! Are we forgetting that every episode in the early seasons someone (usually Dean) invented new ways to call him slurs????
hes so sick of them lmfao
tonight i've rewatched 14.16 and the episode starts with dean saying morning, sunshine to sam and because i'm watching with my mom i have the subtitles turned on to my native language and they literally translated that phrase as morning sweetheart ... but idk how to explain, it's like a term that only married people use in my country, something said lovingly between couples - now you can just imagine me cracking up thinking oh how fitting while my mom is just there like wtf did he really say it like that? lmao
Sam drift (s to Dean)
idk if there's anything deeper but jack's dialogue of "i was in control, she moved" in 14x16 sends my brain churning. i dont know if it's meant to parallel 14x17 and 14x19 but jack says "she kept pushing." and it feels similar. this isn't jack crit or anything i just. am thinking thoughts.
Ohh, I've never though of that, but yes.

Other thing that interests me. I know we talk about how Jack was trying SO hard to show off for Cas in Tombstone, but the same thing is going on here, too.
He wants to show off after Eliot say, “It's okay if you can't do it, dude.”
He wants to show off... and be accepted. It's the only way he knows how to bond.
War. And power. Very “freak with a knife collection-” coded, if you squint.
MAX: Seriously, Jack! Stop! [Jack is entirely focused on the floating blade, but Stacy has had enough and takes a few steps toward Jack in hopes of stopping him, but Jack doesn't notice and the blade stabs through her stomach] MAX: Stacy! [...]
MAX: (to Stacy) It's okay, it's okay. (to Eliot) E-Eliot, go call 911. (to Stacy again) It's okay. You stay with me, okay? Please. JACK: I was in control. E-Everything was fine. She moved. MAX: Get away from her! 14x16
And poor Stacy. Her little brother and love interest are in awe, and she's initially the only one sensing the DANGER:
but she, more in line with Dean's gut, is instinctually (and probably most correctly) wary of Jack's initial display of power.
And she gets the Campbell-coded gut wound of suffering-and-bleeding-out-slowly:
*Note: Mary, Jess, Samuel C, Jimmy, Cas, Crowley, and Henry Winchester, to name a few...
Jack wanted to be the reverse-Azazel, the one who brough the the lover (Cas) back to life for good reasons.
Now, even though he's trying not to, Jack's devolving into a little Azazel properly, stabbing the lover (Stacy) in the gut and descending into the ultimate murder of Mary:
///
He fixes Stacy.
JACK: I-I fixed you. [Max hugs Stacy, and Jack bends as if he's going to hug her too, but Eliot stops him] ELIOT: Don't. JACK: But she's okay. Everything's fine. Right? MAX: No! Okay? Just...get away.
///
But can' undo Mary:
Jack: I-It was an accident. I-I didn't mean to. I just -- I just wanted her to be quiet. I just wanted her gone, but only for a second. And I just. I thought it. It all happened so fast. I need to undo it. You need to help me undo it.
///
ELIOT: "Don't. I don't know WHAT you are... but stay away."
////////////////
It was only a thought.
The margin for error is SO small for Jack. It really is like a lion trying not to step on ants.
Lucifer himself and the specter of Lucifer echoes these fears with:
LUCIFER!JACK: You got me. I'm not Nick. I'm not Lucifer. I'm you. JACK: What? LUCIFER!JACK: Yeah. I'm your, you know, subconscious or whatever. Y-You whipped me up to help you figure this out. [...] 14x18 [...] LUCIFER!JACK: So what are you gonna do? You just gonna pine away for Mommy and the Winchesters? Only they -- they never loved you. You're nothing to them. You're just their -- You're just a little pet monster. Their -- Their muscle. 14x19
///
And the real Lucifer from 13x23 has some PRETTY familiar phrases, too, about being too powerful NOT to hurt the humans.
Some of these phrases even hit at some Core Castiel wounds (Meredith's Good Intentions script, "no matter how much I pretend, I'm not [humna]") and OFC the famed 15x03 The Rupture wound and Cas "the thing that always goes wrong")
LUCIFER: And we're not human, no matter how much we pretend to be. See, humans are...limited and fragile. And I'll admit, they bring out the worst in me, I gotta say. It seems like, you know, no matter how much you try to do right around them, something always goes wrong. Follow? JACK (hesitantly): I ...I know. LUCIFER: Right? And that's not their fault, or ours. It's just, us and humans, we're like oil and water. You know, sardines and strawberries. It's just a bad combination. JACK: What do we do? LUCIFER: Leave. 13x23
///
LUCIFER!JACK: Well, I warned. you. It's worse. Trying and failing. There's no going back.
///
As for 14x19, yes, I think it's that. "She kept pushing / you know how she could be" is the "little Jack" anxiety of the "real-world" shadow of Big John murdering OG Mary in a loss of control.
Soulless Jack is very blasé about Mary. It's reminiscent of practically every character's arc at one time or another.
Jack: What happened to Mary. She kept talking about my soul, t-that I didn't have a soul, and she kept pushing. [...] No, it -- it was me, but I didn't want this no-soul thing to become an issue between us. I guess I snapped. Before I knew it, it was all over.
But it's this moment that convinces Dean... this isn't his Jack. This is a LOSS in his mind. Total and complete.
//
And later if that means killing himself, too. Well... so be it. The future (Mary and Jack) are gone, and Cas is dead to him, so... might as well. Depression and suicidality galore.

Pick one of my favorite little details/thoughts/opinions on 14x16 "Don't Go in the Woods"
Dean and Sam's storyline was sooo boring. The ep would've been great if it 1)
The vibes were quite nice in this ep
"We worry about Jack's unstable powers, so we're going to leave him all alone 2)
Poor Eliot, he just wanted to stop third wheeling for a lesbian couple
Ough, Jack's storyline in the second half of s14 makes me sick. Like he just 3)
I noticed that Jack has a musical theme this season, it's really nice
Oh, another monster that fits the s14's theme of hunger
Wow, finally someone brought up the idea of telling the entire world 4)
I will never understand people who like to go in the woods at night
None of these
1)(Dean and Sam's storyline was sooo boring. The ep would've been great if it) was only about Jack.
2)("We worry about Jack's unstable powers, so we're going to leave him all alone) in the bunker. Surely nothing bad will happen". Jack, your fathers are really stupid.
3)(Ough, Jack's storyline in the second half of s14 makes me sick. Like he just) wants friends and family, he doesn't want to hurt anyone, but he can't help ittt. I'm going to throw up.
4)(Wow, finally someone brought up the idea of telling the entire world) about monsters, I just wish it was actually explored in depth and not just mentioned once.
