Episode 79: 4.19 Jump the Shark
Golly, I spend this whole podcast talking about the pointlessness of revenge, but that’s rather conditional. And specifically in this case, in s4 overall, and every other revenge arc that comes to failure in this entire series, that condition is ACTUALLY KNOWING THE TRUTH ABOUT THE SITUATION!
Blind revenge is always doomed to fail. These ghouls enacted this massive plot for revenge against John Winchester, not even knowing he’d died more than two years before. This was entirely a situation of their own making. They could’ve gone on the rest of their lives just doing their ghoul thing and never come to the attention of hunters, let alone Sam and Dean. But nope, they set out on this mission without having all the facts, and paid the price for it.
Just like Sam and Dean in all of s4. Sam’s on this revenge mission against Lilith, is absolutely convinced he’s doing the right thing, and only with our benefit of hindsight know just how incomplete their data set is going into it. They’re literally spending the entire season working on the wrong problem, by design! And they end up manipulated into exactly the situation they’d spent the season trying to avoid. If only they’d had all the facts up front...
So yeah, revenge, ghouls, the Winchester Brother who was never intended to join the narrative in any larger way, to have died before his first appearance on screen. And round and round we go with the emotional manipulation! Right into the apocalypse.

4x19 - Jump the Shark
I’m a little confused with ep. 8. I thought Adams soul was released to heaven before he was possessed. So he wouldn’t have been in the cage. Or was that a lie. Or did that never happened cause I think I saw an older episode where this was said. But I wasn’t sure
That was the fandom theory for years, yeah. Well, that was the theory a lot of us adopted, anyway, partly out of frustration with the “But what about Adam?” thing, because it was so tiresome. :’D
The fact they never bothered to bring him back, or save him, or even really think about him outside the odd reminder (like in 10.05, when Dean asked who the guy on stage he didn’t recognize was, and she told him it was Adam).
But like… he was supposed to be a one-off character. A joke! Literally! Created by Dabb! The joke was he was actually dead before Sam and Dean even met him! LOL!

He was never supposed to return, ever! And then he got used by Zachariah to lure Dean into saying yes to Michael in 5.18. And for whatever reason, Adam said yes to Michael. It was a trap.
And that’s what Adam was promised, that all he had to do was say yes, and he would be allowed to join his mother in Heaven. So, the assumption was that once he said yes and Michael had a vessel, Adam would get his promised reward. Then at Stull, Michael said that Adam “isn’t home right now” when Dean tried to apologize to him:
DEAN: Adam, if you’re in there somewhere, I am so sorry.MICHAEL/ADAM: Adam isn’t home right now.
Right before Cas molitoved him with holy oil. Which… we know from Cas and poor dead Jimmy that human souls don’t survive the destruction of their vessel. So if Adam had still been in there when his body was destroyed by Holy Fire, that surely would’ve killed him and sent him to Heaven, right? APPARENTLY NOT!
So we’ve just learned not only is Cage Time exactly the same as Earth Time (and I appreciate the show confirming that), but that weirdly, Adam had been in there with Michael all these years (not decades or centuries or millennia, at least, but less than a decade). I think of him as Schrodinger’s Winchester. Was he in the cage all those years? Was he in Heaven? We had no way to know until he walked out with Michael. And honestly the writers could’ve gone either way with it at any point over the years, if they’d wanted to, you know? Because that’s how open-ended stories are crafted. Leave questions open so they can leave themselves more options for the future. And they decided it was finally the time to bring Michael back, and they brought Adam with him.
For the decade I was convinced Adam couldn’t be in the cage (mostly because I was just sick of the BUT WHAT ABOUT ADAM?! crowd because honestly why would we care about a character we met twice– once as a ghoul pretending to be Adam in order to get revenge on the Winchesters, and then as a resurrected Adam who apparently resented John Winchester and wanted nothing to do with Sam and Dean… I mean… why would we care about him?). But then 15.08 did something shocking, and humanized Adam, and actually made me care about him. Finally he was a real person I could empathize with, and not a ghoul or a plot device, you know?
