Rick Sanchez x Reader

A/N: Hello! I am getting back on the horse, and here’s a new drabble to start! This drabble is reflective of season 6 Rick, but no spoilers for the finale. Reminder that my inbox is open for the rest of December, and I look forward to hearing from you <3

“Here sweetie, let me grab that.” It's unnerving. Typically Rick slinks out of sight when you bring in the groceries, or do any chores really. Yet, here he is. Large, warm hands briefly caress yours as he lifts the paper bags you were currently struggling with into his own arms. It makes your chest bloom, but you tamper down the feeling. This road always leads to disappointment.

“Thank you, Rick,” you murmur back, your face still chapped from the harsh winds. Winter isn’t a season that brings change, but it almost seems like Santa has brought you a new Rick. You’re not sure if you like it or not, but not walking on eggshells is nice. Tenderness is nice, but you can’t help but feel like something isn’t right. Guilt sinks like a pit at the bottom of your stomach, and the word ‘ungrateful’ knocks around unhelpfully in your head.

It's nice to see the kids, and Beth so happy though. It makes the feeling of impending doom worse.

You watch cautiously as he begins to set items on the counter, humming a little tune you’re not familiar with. Shrugging your coat off, you continue watching him out of the corner of your peripheral. It's almost like if you take your eyes off of him for a second, something will snap, and old Rick will be back. The thought feels wrong, you love Rick, which means loving all sides.

That doesn’t make it any easier, though.

The house is eerily quiet as well. Typically at this time of day the sound of Morty’s games echo through the living room, clashing with Summer’s endless tiktok binges. Jerry putters around looking for something to do, usually following around the two Beth’s, who have taken a liking to crocheting. Well Beth has, Space Beth usually holds the yarn and pours the wine. You like it, having found your place in this unconventional family.

“Where is everyone?” You ask, putting away the new set of dish towels you just bought. Rick closes the fridge, and turns to you with a tender smile. A genuine smile. You can’t help but feel a little freaked out, although he's been smiling a lot more lately.

“Seeing a movie. I figured I’d wait and-and we’d get some alone time.” He’s so relaxed. You know he has a soft spot for Christmas, and maybe the therapy is working. It’s surprising how fast he’s made changes, once so unagreeable and now considerate. Supportive. Maybe you should take it in stride, embrace it. Enjoy his love while you have it.

You decide to offer him a smile in return, reaching for his lapels to pull him closer. The vanilla ice cream on the counter is melting, but you push it to the back of your mind. His calloused hand rests softly on the back of your neck, his thumb gently rubbing circles at the corner of your jaw. He leans in to kiss you, and you let him.

It’s warm and gentle, you can remember when kissing Rick was all teeth and tongue. Before your relationship used to be nothing but sex, now it’s morphed into something more. He put chains on your tires when it snowed last week, and showed you how to play some new video game with him and the kids.

You like this new Rick. You like being soft.

You saved me from the truth of my past when YOU DIDN’T EVEN TELL ME IT WAS YOU; MY SOULMATE because you saved me from the truth EVEN when that was YOU! Watched Dune earlier today, and I really enjoyed the film as a movie and a sci-fi movie, in general, but I also found myself feeling some kind of way as a Dune book-lover. Spoiler=ish stuff below

Loves:

-Loved the tweaks to Chani's character in allowing her agency and a voice for her people.

-Loved the exploration of Paul's pre-awakened character not wanting to be a cog in the future-seeing machinations.

-Also loved that it made it more apparent how the Bene Geserit played everyone like puppets to gain their wanted future, even though that backfired in their faces.

-Loved how certain things with the awakening, spice visions, and so-forth were explained.

-Loved seeing the relationship between Chani and Shishakli. Would have liked to see Shihsakli do what she actually did in the books, but i liked that they expanded her character, even if it broke my heart.

-Loved the music. I still stand by Children of Dune's soundtrack by Brian Tyler forever being superior (Dune Messiah, Inama Nushif, Summon the Worms, and Reunited are all on my top played playlist and have been for decades in my music library), but Hans Zimmer's stuff for ths movie is spectacular.

-Loved that it really didn't leave much room in seeing Paul as what he truly is, which is the atomic bomb he was always meant to be.

Not-Loves:

-As a Paul x Chani lover from the get-go, my little heart was broken by that ending and how it was handled, but this one kinda moved back to Loves once I wrapped my head around how the changes to Chani would make this ending the only believable path for her, and it also makes me excited for Dune Messiah and how this changes her path there as well.

-Time-frames and Alia. By Jessica still being pregnant, we lose her being the one to kill her grandfather and also, it makes me frown at the fact that all of Paul's development and regression, as well as the war only took place in a 9-ish month span, which was definitely not the case.

-Leto I wasn't a thing, which was kinda puzzling.

-No representation with the spacing guild, which play a huge part in why spice is even so important.

Maybe I will need to see the movie again to come to terms with the not-loves, but like I said, this movie was really enjoyable as is, and it is making me excited for the next one, which there had better be.

From what I've seen of no spoiler reviews for Star Trek Discovery's season 5 -- my theory about Trek shows that reach seasons 4 and 5 remains true.

Most reviews have mentioned that this season's writing feels more confident. According to the spoiler-free reviews Sonqua Martin Green is again a standout but also a lot of the main cast get their due too! It seems like they finally can write to an ensemble. (Don't quote me on that though, this I need to see in action).

Apparently, Callum Keith Rennie's new character on Disco brought a lot of new energy to the show the way Lorca and Shaw (Picard), or as I call it, the Seven of Nine energy where someone is unimpressed with the main crew. And is not an enemy but the characters are forced to stand up to the scrutiny.

It's such a shame this is the final season of Discovery, just when the show finally hit its groove. It makes sense too that they finally get there because they finally have a consistent writing team.
