My new chainsaw-
I bought this to get at the hard-to-prune areas on the apple trees. Pretty small but it gets the job done. It is just turning warm here and I wanted to get trimming done before the sap starts running (no, not me 🤣)
These pine branches are next. These were dropped by the power company while they were restoring power after the crash out front last month. Brush pickup will start here in about three weeks.

Spent a couple hours out thinning the fruit trees. They got great pollination this year to the point that the fruit coming in is ridiculous.
In two hours I didn’t even finish two trees. I got almost one of the two pear trees thinned and half of one apple tree. That only leaves another ten full trees. Jesus this is gonna take awhile but I suppose it’s a good problem to have.

On the cusp
Like a lot of other people, we've been lured by recent spring-like weather into spring-like chores.
In a collosal leap of faith, I pulled up our driveway markers Tuesday and took a couple of preliminary steps toward taking the snowblower off our tractor and installing the mower.
Meanwhile, Sharon slashed and burned, raked and burned, dragged and burned ... Look carefully and you might see her behind the smokescreen.
The forecast for today in mid-Michigan is 68 degrees and sunny, but temperatures well below freezing are in the picture for early next week.
Spring saffron chores are really mild. I took the wire screen off the bed, it needs to go to the veggie bed in the backyard now. I carefully reviewed the entire saffron patch, and anything growing in it that wasn’t saffron was pulled up. This is a really important time to stop incipient weeds. All those green leaves are still nourishing the underground corms, and need to be left in place.
I noticed this one corm that seemed to not have made very long leaves, and they clearly died back some time ago. That’s a corm I suspect has not survived the winter and will be a gap on the row when they bloom in the fall. Without leaves to take in nutrients and photosynthesize, the corms don’t survive.
