Recently, my husband acquired several traditional Springerle Biscuit Molds, and they're just precious. Aside from working extremely well to emboss baked goods, they also make such lovely wall ornaments.

From top right moving clockwise, the ones shown here depict: a Snail in a garden-scape, a wreathed Stag and Doe in a forest, and a Pomegranate motif.

I made Springerle yesterday (and today, it's a two day affair) with my aunt. They're traditional anise cookies that are moldes with different motives, dried out for a day and then baked. And everytime i made them i have forgotten how pretty they are, and how much detail there is?? hold on

This wooden pastry mold was used to make springerle, a type of cookie that originated in southern Germany about five hundred years ago. The imprinted cookies were traditionally made for ceremonies and celebrations, and are now typically prepared to mark Christian holidays, such as Christmas. Springerle molds made in Pennsylvania by German immigrants showed wide variations in design—this particular mold is carved with birds in their native habitats. Delicate Springerle cookies, precisely baked, delicately flavored, and beautifully formed...how very festive! They look as if they’d fit right in hung on a pine bough, among the other seasonal baubles. They almost look too pretty to eat. Almost.
