Flemington, NJ_Stangl Pottery_c.1960 At the time of which I speak, Flemington was a sleepy little county seat. The Carnival atmosphere of the Lindbergh Kidnapping Trial had long since gone off into history. The town was surrounded by lovely farmland and boasted only 2 things which induced us to drive down from the Metropolitan area: Stangl's and Flemington Cut Glass. These Stangl kilns had long since gone cold but you could buy all their first-line products here as well as seconds at vastly reduced prices. Some seconds were more irregular than others and you had to pick through to find the good stuff. Before my time Gramma had acquired her large set of "good" dishes from the seconds bins. Across town, there was, indeed, frequently some artisan sitting at one of the few grinding wheels at the Cut Glass Factory etching designs into vases, bowls, and what-not but that stuff, displayed under special lighting, while gorgeous was pricey. The real attraction was rooms and rooms of ordinary glass goods in great variety and quantity ranging upwards from some which were no better or worse than might have been found in a 5 & 10 cent store to some more unusual items and all at very enticing prices. It was on one visit to these meccas that, encouraged by my mother, I begin buying steins and mugs (at low prices) a mania which continues to this very hour.
