Star Finch Neochmia ruficauda
A seed-eating bird found in northern Australia. There are three subspecies, however the subspecies ruficauda was last sighted in 1994 and may be extinct. These finches inhabit low, dense, damp grasslands and sedgelands bordering estuarine areas, watercourses, swamps and other freshwater-bodies. The star finch's habitat is threatened by overgrazing of grasslands, removing essential cover for their survival as well as sources of food and water.
