Like on the sfw side of things i think it would be cute to see Rob trip sit Herman and help him relax and yk not get super paranoid after a brownie or two (that boy is tall af) and eventually it becomes a regular thing. How do you usually Stat ppl out in Dispatch? Also if Robert had stats what do you think they would be?

OOH i loveee this question. okay i’ve played through 5 times and done all the potential combos so atp i feel like i have a fairly good grasp of how i like to stat out my z teamers.

it is probably the Smartest option to take the synergy pairs and make their stats complimentary to each other. do i do that? usually no. what i typically do is give them a primary stat and one or two secondary stats that i feel like fits the character's established vibe—the exception being waterboy, because he starts with such low unestablished stats that you can kind of go buckwild with him (and is why concepts like full-combat or full-intellect wb are so fun to me !!)

i'm gonna go through my choices for all of them though and will put it under the cut! if there's a power-up i always pick for them i'll do that too. (bonus knowledge for if you are actually playing: unlock your synergy pairs asap, especially mal and waterboy, so you can then send them on missions with injured heroes later on without having to worry about reaching max synergy)

sonar: high intellect. medium-high charisma. medium mobility. low-medium combat. low-medium vigor. i usually just stat out his hybrid mode and don't think too hard about his beast mode.

prism: high charisma. low intellect. low vigor. medium mobility. medium-high combat. i feel like she'll throw a fit if she breaks a nail during a fight, but you don't need to get up close and comfortable if you can blind a man from 30 feet away.

visi: high combat. medium vigor. medium-high mobility. low intellect. low-medium charisma depending on how i feel about her that run. she always gets the wolf pack power-up.

punch up: high combat. high vigor. medium-low mobility. low intellect. medium charisma. unless he's being sent with coupé, his powers usually overlap enough that i don't need him to squeeze in on a job and will always go for harder head.

flambae: high combat. medium-high vigor. medium mobility. medium charisma. low intellect. i think i usually choose comet as his ability but i'm blanking on what that actually means.

malevola: my most balanced hero every time because i feel like there's not a singular trait that she displays over others. low intellect. medium charisma. medium-high mobility. medium-high combat. medium vigor. her portal power came in clutch in the final battle.

golem: high vigor. medium-high combat. medium-low charisma. low intellect. low mobility. i like giving him some cha to balance out visi and because i think his friendly and chill demeanor is disarming. the redistribution of points isn't all that helpful; i'd much rather him fill in the empty slots on a call.

phenomaman: i'm ngl i don't actually remember his starting stats if you pick him in ep 4. but given where he is at that point he's getting high combat. high mobility. low intellect. low charisma. medium-high vigor.

coupé: high mobility. high combat. low charisma. low-medium intellect. medium vigor. autistic child soldier who can fly. i think this is very sexy. she is very intimidating to others. i'll always take pirouette because it's such a clutch ability (basically using a luck point to reroll a failed job)

waterboy: high intellect. low charisma. low-medium combat. low vigor. low-medium mobility. since he starts out so low i usually focus on putting most of his points into intellect and will always give him the bonus point we get from leveling up. however, if i keep sonar, he's a bit more balanced and will go for higher combat and mobility. i finally learned to take advantage of his holy water spit ability.

i think similar to how sonar has his mega-bat and hybrid stats, robert would have robert and mecha man stats. i also think that his stats pre- and post-crash differ wildly, but we're working with end/post-canon stats here, so here's what i'm thinking:

robert: medium-high intellect, medium charisma, low mobility, medium vigor, high combat.

mecha man: high combat, high vigor, low charisma, medium mobility, medium-low intellect.

essentially, he can take as many hits as he can dole out, though not without lasting effects. he's a charmer, even with his monotone delivery and occasional social blunder, and is intelligent enough to pilot the mech and understand blueprints while some of royd's explanations still go over his head. the mech is fast and can fly, but isn't as dextrous as the other flight-capable heroes. obviously can take some pretty significant hits before being damaged enough to render it useless. he speaks while in the suit, but i think robert's much more focused on getting the job done, and if he can get a few snarky lines in there, more power to him.

okay so i think a Lot of this is tied up in robert’s connection to the mecha man mantle and all the history it holds. it’s his family legacy, his duty, his purpose, and it’s a huge part of the reason he makes so many excuses for his dad/downplays his trauma/blames himself for what happened.

he has no reason to defend robbie to toxic in the first scene other than that lingering sense of duty and the now-instinctual reaction to repress, downplay, brush off anything his dad did to him, because it was all for the greater good. robbie may have been too busy with brave brigade duties to know robert well enough to like him, but he did love him. he Had to have loved him. because if he didn’t, then there was no reason for it at all. no excuse, nothing to differentiate robbie from a stranger grabbing him on his way home from school.

robbie’s love was harsh, rough, grating. he showed his affection through playful arm punches that robert was never allowed to wince at, through pushing him in training til he broke because he knows robert can handle just a little more. the sex—because it wasn’t assault, it wasn’t r…wasn’t anything, robert wanted it, robert needed it, robert asked for it—was just another way for his dad to show that he knew robert’s body better than robert himself. and didn’t he? because every reaction, every thought that robert has was robbie’s first. his father didn’t raise a son. he raised mecha man.

and as robert grows up, that’s how it settles in his mind. those things that happened to him when he was younger, too young, only a child, they didn’t happen to robert. they happened to blue, they happened to the next generation of mecha man, because that was all robbie ever saw in him, and so that’s how robert begins to see himself, too.

the first time robert climbs into the mech after his father dies, he almost doesn’t get out. he just sits there, curled up in his seat, swallowed by his dad yet again, and it’s so suffocating that for a second robert feels safe, feels like he’s with his dad again. and then he starts chasing that feeling, stealing beer from the gas station to drink like his dad did, starting fights he knows he’s not ready to finish. hunting down shroud gives him purpose again, something else to focus on when the neighbors start fighting next door and all he can think about is his dad storming down the hall after a mission gone sour, whiskey on his breath and hands gripping hard enough to bruise.

even after he starts at sdn, he still can’t relax. can’t make robert and blue work together. he has to rebuild the mech, has to become mecha man again, because if he gives up, that means that his dad hurt a child. not a soldier, not a robot, not a hero. just robert. and that’s too much to think about. so he has to rebuild the mech. maybe that will finally make his dad proud.

I feel like when it comes to picking Waterboy vs Phenoman the game wants wants you to pick Waterboy, he's so present whether you pick him or not, whereas Phenoman basically disappears if you don't pick him. What do you think of this difference and do you think Phenoman should've been involved in the narrative, if so where/how (this is a beefy one my bad)

that's so interesting i have only really thought about this in terms of cutting sonar or coupe (the dialogue you get when cutting her and the underwhelm of sonar's fight stand out as two of the top reasons i feel that the game wants you to keep sonar). there's no way for me to give you an unbiased answer because i Do like waterboy more than phenomaman. but this is as close as i can come.

so let's start with comparing their scenes. while phenomaman isn't officially introduced until the end of episode two, his perfect and shining presence is felt from the end of episode one. the empty billboard is the main menu screen for ep one and it's very prominent in the scene between robert and blazer up there, which you can also compare to blazer on the side of the bus--he is a high-profile hero that people look up to and are potentially intimidated by, a concept that is reinforced in the beginning of ep 2 with the sdn commercial. still, you get those tiny cracks in his armor ("did he just say 'phenomamal'?", him visibly reading the lines off the teleprompter and not knowing what to do with his hands) but he is overall a formidable presence until episode 4. they obviously have to hype him up so that he is able to have this rock bottom fall. but his initial introduction is in drastic contrast with waterboy, who is introduced as an anxious superhero fanboy with powers that seemingly cause a lot more problems than they could possibly help. phenomaman is the reason he even talks to robert in the first scene!

so even when he's not in the scene, phenomaman's presence is still felt, and this is why i think that waterboy technically has more scenes: to establish him as a friendly face around the office in the same way that phenomaman is established as a well-known hero. but they both have an introduction at the beginning of ep 2 and both have a scene at the end of the day before they both have scenes in episode 4. since you don't even have the option for dialogue choices in waterboy's scenes (flambae noodles, optional shower scene, optional mandy date), and they're fairly short as opposed to robert having a dialogue tree conversation with phenomaman, i feel like it makes sense for wb to numerically have more scenes in that ep. and depending on who you pick for the team, you have a conversation to increase your bonds with that person in ep 4, and the other person gets a scene for when they get recruited in episode 8. so overall, i feel like they get relatively equal screen time? unless there are additional wb scenes i'm forgetting about. but i will agree that wb's scenes probably last a little bit longer than phen's like if you clipped them all together.

now to get to the actual point of your question - i think that phenomaman's character suffers from being nearly entirely centered around blazer. both of robert's conversations with him are about how he needs to let go of blazer and focus on finding new passions, and i think that if they worked more on that second part then it would have been a more successful arc. but regardless of if you add him to the team or not, most of his in-game interactions are still somehow related to blazer or his feelings about her. i would love to see more of him bonding with the team because i don't really feel like we get much of that in the game. when i was first playing through, i honestly felt like the bullying of phen when you add him to your team doesn't really add up - like yeah he's going through a rough patch but he's like. a very famous extraterrestrial superhero who's going through a rough patch. i want the team to encourage his opossum facts :( but i can also definitely see this as being an opportunity for a bunch of ex-villains to punch down on someone who used to be superior to them, so to speak. so i can’t really blame them. i just like aliens learning about human culture and being excited to share.

however, i don't think there's much for him to do storywise if you don't add him to your team, because by this metric of success, he wouldn't be at torrance sdn if he was doing better mentally or learned to recalibrate his focus. plus, if for no other reason than the potential awkwardness in the blazer - robert - phenomaman triangle, the story encourages you to avoid that and give waterboy a chance (though i honestly think there should’ve been More friction between blazer and phen if he’s added to the team, but i also understand that there’s a limited amount of time for character development and deeper plot when there’s such a large ensemble cast, which basically explains any other gripes i had above as well)

so the real answer to what i would change...don't cut anyone. add phenomaman and waterboy. it’s a better balanced team, there could be longer shifts or more calls, and the game is maybe an episode longer to accommodate the full team. there's no explanation for how robert manages to wrangle them all but he does it beautifully.
