In the Wake of Devastation || Open
When the lockdown had ended and the Aurors came in and took care of the remaining hunters, Jim had been unconscious, still lying next to Ursula’s body. He didn’t remember it but he’d been taken out f the dungeon and up to the infirmary. He’d been out for days, with a few broken ribs he hadn’t noticed in all the drama. His wounds weren’t as serious as a lot of others so he hadn’t been a priority and if any part of him had been conscious, he would have been glad for it. He would have been glad to not be awake to deal with what had happened, what he had been responsible. He didn’t invite the hunters in but he sure as hell handled it badly when they were there and because he rushed in to the danger, other got dragged into it with him and they were the ones who really got hurt.
It was late in the afternoon when he finally came to in an infirmary bed. Everything smelled sterile and his body ached like he couldn’t believe but that was nothing compared to the realization of his guilt. He tried to sit up but they had given him something that made him drowsy, as he moved the world began to spun but he had to get up. He had to see, maybe he was remembering it wrong, maybe they were both fine. Ursula was fine. She had to be.
In his hospital gown, he managed to get bth feet over the side of the bed, slipping right off and landing on the floor with a thud. He struggled up to his feet but it was hard, so much harder than he expected it would be, it was like he was a little paper boat on a turbulent sea, controlling his body was just that hard. “James!” he tried to call out but his voice was horse. “Ursula!” he called out louder, wincing in pain, gripping at his chest, a broken rib maybe?” He couldn’t tell.
He managed to get upright and moving when he collided with someone, stumbling backwards, “fuck, no!” he shouted, wincing again as he fell back onto the floor.
