Johann Sebastian Bach’s Sonata for Violin and Harpsichord, this time in C Minor. Some may recognise the opening movement as being similar to Bach’s famed Aria, Erbarme Dich. Given Bach’s love for reusing various themes in different pieces, this should not come as a surprise. Rather, it demonstrates the eternal flexibility of his work, that he could create thematic material so evocative that it could be changed again and again to suit the circumstances.
Please enjoy an excerpt from #erbarmedich from #stmatthewpassion by #jsbach performed by me on #violins #violas #violoncellodaspalla with #violasolo and #violinsolo This #beautifulmusic is sung by the character of Saint Peter after he denies knowing Jesus 3 times. The #pizzicato #bassline is said to represent Peter’s tears and the #semitone dissonances heard in #groupsofthree throughout the piece represent the three times denial. #stmatthewspassion #passionweek #johansebastianbach #johannsebastian #baroquemusiclovers #barockmusik #celloist #violapower #violaworld #violanation #stringsextet #stringplayers (at Washington D.C.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CcLTrh-r-yy/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Wahrlich, dieser ist Gottes Sohn gewesen - Bach's St. Matthew Passion According to @ar_webster_russells and @surya_kamal for anyone in the keyboards for @angela.vazquezespinosa.17 and @4ronwasserman forever. The same thing about the song makes me according by @pkkeys_ and @mariaconkey to make happened for this song. And the chorus playing the oratorio for the choral music. #stmatthewpassion #bwv244 #wahrlichdieseristgottessohngewesen #stmatthewpassionbwv244 #passionesecondomatteo https://www.instagram.com/p/CBzEfg6HbYl/?igshid=znoha7xy5hik
The Academy of Ancient Music presents James Hall singing Erbarme Dich from Bach’s St Matthew Passion. A wonderful, rich performance.
The opening to Bach’s St Matthew Passion, Kommt ihr Töchter, helft mir klagen. Bach’s St Matthew Passion is, as Sir John Eliot Gardiner says, more atmospheric than the tense St John Passion. He uses the same suspension technique here, but with arguably more resonance. As I once saw a commentator say, those opening bars are possibly some of the greatest contrapuntal writing ever produced. Indeed, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion is unrivaled to this day, rightly revered by subsequent composers and the classical music audience at large.
Bach’s profoundly dissonant chorale, Wir setzen uns mit Tränen nieder, the end of the St Matthew Passion.
