Last December, 21-year-old Maseray Sei died in southern Sierra Leone from complications arising from Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

This young woman, who was subjected to the human rights abuse along with others, is reported to have bled to death and was found dead in a bondo bush – a private enclosure constructed away from daily life, where initiation into the Bondo society takes place.

After Sei's tragic death, our friends at Equality Now helped lead a national campaign demanding better protections against FGM. Their work led to multiple government officials acknowledging the need for criminalizing FGM. We need to build on this momentum to end FGM now!
