I received an ARC of Strange Grace by @tessa.gratton in exchange for my honest review. So a big thank-you to @netgalley and to @simonschusterca for the early read. . 🍁SYNOPSIS🍁 “Once, a witch made a pact with a devil. The legend says they loved each other, but can the story be trusted at all?” A long time ago, this village made a bargain with the devil, to ensure good things happen to the town (no sickness, good crops, etc.). The townspeople have to sacrifice a their best young man, during the Slaughter Moon to uphold the deal. The sacrificed man becomes and saint and has to run through the forest. If he survives the night, he may live. Our book takes place when the Slaughter Moon rises early, and the townspeople weren’t ready. We follow Mairwen, a witch, Rhun, the expected saint/sacrifice, and Arthur, who is an outcast, as they struggle with the roles they must play when someone needs to be sacrificed to the Devil’s Forest. . 🍂REVIEW🍂 The perfect October read!! I loved the premise and the world building! The characters were surprisingly diverse and complex and the story itself really challenged gender/sexuality norms and expectations. The narration hops between protagonists and timelines, which I felt really added to the story! This creepy read really makes you feel the “The Clock Is Ticking” vibes as you read, and I couldn’t wait to get to the end. Strange Grace feels a lot like a dark fairytale and I definitely suggest this to anyone looking for a spooky Halloween book this fall. I will certainly be getting my hands on the finished copy when it is published, so that I can reread this closer to Halloween. .
