Netflix – the Death of DC?
Short answer: no. But… with a few nuances.
You’ve probably already heard the loud and terrifying news that Netflix is buying Warner Bros.
Personally, I mostly see negative reactions to it. People are like: “Well, that’s it. Netflix is buying WB. Say goodbye to good projects.”
But why exactly do you think Netflix is going to destroy every WB franchise?
Right now I want to talk specifically about the Batman franchise. I can allow myself that, ll.
Let’s look at all sides of what it means if Netflix becomes the rights holder for Batman. And honestly? If you dig a little deeper, it’s not as terrifying as it seems.
P.S. I’m not a Netflix fan, by the way. I’m just a regular viewer who wants to discuss the whole thing.
Cons:
– Mediocre projects.
– Questionable-quality projects.
– A bunch of same-ish, copy-paste projects created purely for profit.
Scared already? And just so you know – there’s no safe word here. Our BDSM party cannot end, haha.
Pros:
– Possible adaptation of horror comics.
– A new era of Batman in both films and series.
– Zero fear of trying something new.
Warner Bros is a great company. We all love WB projects – that’s just a fact. But as far as I know, WB doesn’t have its own major streaming service. Meaning they’ve been relying mostly on box office revenue. But let’s be honest with ourselves: when was the last time you went to the cinema? I bet it’s been a while.
We’re in the era of online services now – online shopping, online movies, etc. And that’s normal. The world is changing.
The only thing that personally feels a bit questionable to me is why Netflix decided to buy WB in the first place. They’ve been having issues with subscriptions lately – tons of people canceling. But that’s just my personal opinion. As they say: “state your opinion and run,” haha.
Anyway, back to the main question. And now the most interesting part.
From what I know about Netflix as a company, they have never been afraid of experiments. And what does that mean? Exactly. There’s a chance they’ll start adapting the stuff WB was afraid to touch. Horror Batman projects, hello there.
Like, seriously. We now actually have a chance to see adaptations of comics like: «The Batman Who Laughs», «Death of the Family» (2012), «Endgame», and maybe even «Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth». And don’t you dare say you don’t want to see that. I’m sure you’re already drooling, haha.
This doesn’t change the fact that we’ll also get some questionable projects – but it also doesn’t change the fact that we might get absolutely amazing ones. And DC… DC has existed for almost 100 years. It’s had plenty of highs and lows. So the change of rights holder won’t really destroy the franchise.
So what’s my verdict?
It’s neither good nor bad. It’s just… normal.
Let’s all collectively start praying for Netflix to adapt Batman’s horror comics.
What do you think about the whole situation?
I just think it’s so fucking hilarious how much of an emotional rizz Eric has. Even when he’s not even trying to manipulate his friends all he has to do is throw kicked puppy eyes and they all fold like wet paper, especially Kyle.
It’s a testament of how much of a soft spot his friend group has for him, too. Currently watching Streaming Wars and like, he’s not even lying about his mom needing surgery—he really thinks she needs it. So they can stop being poor. The boys just didn’t bother to ask him to elaborate after seeing how upset he was.
I’m honestly surprised no one here is really talking about the (almost certain) Netflix buyout of HBO, and everything this could mean for film and television, regardless of whatever deal Netflix manages to negotiate.
This isn’t just about the inevitable price hikes, which will push cinema even further away from being accessible to everyone. Something that used to feel like it belonged to the public hasn’t been that way in quite a long time. And, of course, the overall quality of what ends up on screen will almost certainly drop. A lot of HBO staff will leave, and with them go fresh ideas and the creative backbone of film and TV.
Netflix, as always, will stick to the “safe and cheap” route. Lower budgets, lower risks, lower ambition. Their entire approach couldn’t be more different from what HBO has stood for. They don’t go for the daring, the strange, the innovative. They mass-produce series with barely any quality control, and only commit to a show if it proves profitable in the long run. If something doesn’t land immediately, it’s cancelled. Simple as that.
HBO, on the other hand, has always been known for its very particular way of making cinema and television: intention, craft, creative voices, attention to detail. You could always trust that there was a certain standard behind anything they released. What’s happening now is, quite honestly, dreadful for the industry.
Warner funded projects no one else would’ve dared to touch, and many of those films thrived under their banner. You can bet that under Netflix, that simply won’t happen… not even close. And if there is ever a halfway decent film coming out of this, I’d wager Netflix will dump it straight onto streaming rather than give it a proper theatrical release.
Today, cinema and television took a massive hit. The industry has been dealt a really heavy blow. I can’t see anything remotely positive coming out of this... just further losses for the democratization of film, of culture, and yet another step towards an even bigger monopoly.
do you consider specials (post covid, end of obesity, etc.,) to be movies?
yeah why not
no, blu is the only south park movie
So, on Anthony Garmuglia's latest video, he exposits that the live action Lilo & Stitch was a success was because it was a big box office family movie in a time when there were no other family movies.
The death of the family movies and comedies is what made Lilo & Stitch succeed. Family movies used to be a genre: the bulletproof nanny's and Tooth Fairies in training were what parents would take their kids to see on a weekend.
Now yadda yadda late stage capitalism, but Anthony also mentions how the switch to streaming has almost made family entertainment barren as well. Without scheduled TV and commercial slots there is no need to break down demographics by the hour and day, which allowed shows to get more experimental.
Save Fairly Oddparents: A New Wish!
It genuinely concerns me there's a chance we won't get a Fairly Oddparents: A New Wish, Season 2. We've lost so many good cartoons lately, I can't take another victim! Especially one that means so much to me! 😭💔
💚Here's what we can do to help🩷:
⭐ The NUMBER ONE thing to do: businesses speak the language of money. If you like it and want to save it from a dreaded fate, purchase it anywhere you can and/or watch it on Paramount+ and especially NETFLIX (dropping Nov 14th)
These are what Netflix looks for when renewing a show. If we play it right and max out the completion rate, viewership and engagement stats, we have a good chance of saving this show!

✨Other ideas:
Write a letter to Nickelodeon with fan art or saying how much the show means to you. It's s easy to ignore stuff or not take it seriously on social media, but if it's in physical form it's much more meaningful. This is their mailing address: P.O. Box 7063, Columbia, SC 29202.
Again, they only care about continuing something if it's worth the investment, a Go Fund Me to have it fan funded could be very persuasive. It's uncommon but has been done on occasion for other shows. @nickelodeon please accept our money! 💰
Raise awareness online too, get a hashtag trending like: #renew fop anw
Treat whatever cause your passionate about like a political campaign, get signs, ads, t-shirts or whatever, just spread the message of what you want in multiple forms, it'll better your chances of success
Pray. I believe God can move mountains for whatever you care about because He cares for you. Seriously do it now! It can't hurt to try, right?
Anything else I didn't think of? Let me know.
Thank you for listening to my spiel! 😁
look at them!
