I want to talk about SaguShin and the way Saguru treats Conan in canon. Because I’ve come to the conclusion that Saguru might know Conan is Shinichi.

Now, their first meeting is during the Sunset Mansion Case and though they do not have real interactions with each other, we do have the implication that he at least is not dismissive of Conan despite Conan being a child; he is perfectly fine going along with Conan’s ruse to lure out the culprit.

The next time they meet is during the fake Detective Koushien. They only met once before this. One time. So it’s not as though Saguru has a larger sample-size of Conan’s abilities; he’s seen one deduction from Conan - and yet, Conan has apparently immediately gained Saguru’s respect with that.

When Heiji gets miffed that Saguru is supposed to represent the East, because Heiji thinks that Shinichi is the only one worthy of that title, Saguru... doesn’t even try to fight him on that. He’s not offended in his pride at all, he volunteers to play the role of a guest star from abroad.

And instead of leaving the East unrepresented, it’s Saguru who suggests Conan to replace Shinichi.

It’s not Heiji, who is so bad at keeping Shinichi’s secret anyway, or Shinichi himself who has a certain amount of pride that might have pushed him into volunteering. Nope. It’s Saguru, who only met Conan once and who thinks so highly of Conan’s skills that he thinks him worthy of being an official representative.

And while I personally find the line “I think he’s better than that Kudou Whoever-kun” absolutely hilarious, for various reasons... I don’t buy for a second that Hakuba doesn’t know who Shinichi is.

There’s just no way that a Holmes Geek who walks around in a Sherlock cosplay has not heard of and intensely studied the so-called Heisei Holmes. Because even people who aren’t obsessed with Sherlock Holmes know about Shinichi, he is a big name among detectives in Japan.

This whole thing just... really feels to me like Saguru knows. He knows that Conan actually is the real representative of the East. That he is Kudou Whoever. And Saguru is being cheeky here by deliberately not remembering Shinichi’s name.

Because as nice as the thought of Saguru just fully and completely accepting that this seven year old child is an absolute genius is... I find it more appealing to think that Saguru knows and thus finds it so easy to respect Conan this much (because yes, Conan’s abilities are acknowledged and respected by others in canon; though those usually have seen him in action more than once at least and they usually don’t blindly compare him to others and put Conan on a pedestal like this).

Which I would then also apply to the utter lack of them interacting otherwise.

I mean. Conan is the KID Killer. He’s attended a bunch of heists by now. And while, sure, neither Conan nor Saguru attend every heist, it is peculiar that Saguru never shows up when it’s a Suzuki heist, or any other time Conan is involved. And yes, I know that on a meta-level, that is due to Gosho not wanting for Saguru to steal Conan’s show and not wanting to put too much MK into his DC, but in universe it seems very strange at this point.

So, what if Saguru put one and one together. The bright detectives in Conan’s life have always figured out his secret very quickly, so what if Saguru did too. What if he’s staying away from cases where Conan is involved on purpose, because he knows that Conan is more than capable to deal with KID alone.

I mean, either way, SaguShin is superb - be that Saguru simply being completely and entirely accepting of the fact that this seven year old can easily outsmart him and other grown ups and thus treating Conan as an equal while inexplicably having no idea who Kudou Shinichi even is (there is a delightful hilarity to that angle, I gotta say), or be that the idea that just maybe Saguru knows whose mind is hiding in that shrunken body.
