Happy hour at the bars! While meditating on the preacher bench between sets it occured to me there's a major spiritual component to lifting. You see, all growth, physical or mental, requires progress. To move forward you have to continually be a little better than the person you were yesterday. In fact, I don't get very far in life by responding to today's challenges with only yesterday's solutions. I have to change the routine, add variation. 1 more rep, 2 more seconds, 3 more pounds. Be more patient, be a bit nicer, bite my tongue. And I fail. A lot. To build muscle, to build character, I gotta have failure. But failure is a blessing, an opportunity to go back to the drawing board and re-evaluate what I'm doing wrong. Most times in my life I improved were after major failures. Setbacks, plateaus, times my character came up short or I didn't get what I want. What's great is though, nobody else in the gym, at work, on the street, matters for this. It's not your business what she looks like, or how much he can lift. What she did to you or what he said about her. Your focus is trying to be a better YOU. Bottom line. And sometimes it's going to suck. But both muscle and character don't grow stronger without first being broken down a bit. And breaking what you thought you knew is going to be uncomfortable. It's going to hurt. But if we're doing it right, the results are secondary. We enjoy it because we find value in the process. We enjoy being in the MOMENT of giving today an extra inch. That's our reward. So here's to being the best you that you can possibly be today!
