Why The Blue Hour? Firstly, because it’s the title of the most recent Suede album, which I happened to be listening to when I put the captions on these pics. (And it’s a truly fabulous album. Like gob-smackingly, breath-snatchingly, heart-stoppingly marvellous; also haunting AF. Seriously, do your ears a kindness and give it a listen on Spotify or whatever right now).

Secondly, because I’m wearing blue. In this instance my trusty, re-mixed Oliver Bonas cocoon cardi/oversized waistcoat thing, which always makes me feel like I should be wearing a powdered wig and grilling the witness for the prosecution. 

And thirdly because you’d better believe I’m feelin’ it. Blue, that is. I’ve lost my contract for this term despite my lovely line manager and colleagues fighting tooth and nail to retain my hours. I have a few scattered lecturing gigs coming up over the next few weeks but not nearly enough and, never mind anything else, I miss my colleagues and I love that job. And my ongoing adulting situation is doing a serious number on my mental health, which is why it’s taken me the best part of two weeks to get this outfit up on the blog – and why I’m feeling a very strong urge to eat my body weight in marrons glacés for the duration. (This will obviously not be happening because a) insulin resistance, and b) I’d have to take out a mortgage). I’m sure something will turn up eventually, but right now would be a whole lot better.

So, anyway, moving on. This frock; it’s a size 24 but I think it looks okay anyway, especially under the legal robe. Fit wise I’m not a massive proponent of the shift dress so I appreciate a bit of leeway in the fabric when I sit down, if you get my drift.

(Image source: Toothpaste For Dinner). I found this lined, crepe frock on my final teaching day last term and wore it several times over the festive period. It’s the Studio 8 Mariette dress from 2015 and originally retailed for £99. Reckon the £8.50 I handed over was more than reasonable. I’d admired the print when I first saw it on the website but suspected it might look a bit frumpy on. Glad to discover I was wrong. The only fault I could find was that the hem on one of the sleeves had come adrift. Other than that it looked brand spanking new, bit of strategically placed Wundaweb and I was well away.
