Grammar Notebook - Pero vs. Sino

The words “pero” and “sino” can mean “but” in Spanish, however, the words are not interchangeable. The word “sino” usually requires for the first half of sentence to be a negative clause. **Think of “sino” as “fixing” or correcting a sentence that is not true between two contrasting, related ideas.

Pero = [But]

Sino = [But Rather] or [But Instead]

Let’s look at one example:

• I don’t want coffee, but rather tea.

• No quiero café, sino té.

The first part of the sentence is incorrect (does not want coffee) and therefore “sino” is used to clarify and correct the sentence.

Let’s try another:

• She wasn’t angry, but rather upset.

• No estaba enojada, sino molesta.

The first part of the sentence is incorrect (the woman is not angry) and “sino” is used to correct the sentence to state the she is actually upset.

Here is a last example:

• I don’t like meat, but rather fish.

• No me gusta la carne, sino el pescado.

In the sentence, we are trying to clarify that I enjoy fish, not meat. Therefore, we need to use “sino” to alter the sentence.
