Subitizing

It seems that there is a class of immediate, accurate perception of low numbers of things. This near instantaneous enumeration is named subitizing and is distinct from conscious, laborious counting.

(An aside gleaned from reading the subitizing links in the Wikipedia pages is that ASCII-art representations of letters composed of un-related letters are called Navon figures and that reading their component (local) letters and ignoring the overall (global) shape can cause a decrease in facial-recognition abilities for up to five minutes.

Etymology is from Latin subitus meaning sudden, unexpected, surprising.
