Billy would be a liar if he said he didn't drive by your house almost everyday since you'd left. Like you'd somehow just be there, waiting around for him. He had gone through almost every emotion possible. He was pissed you left him without allowing him to apologize. He was upset with himself for upsetting you so badly that you didn't want to see him again. He was sad and Billy never allowed himself to be sad, he ignored it. Until the one day he realized every song he listened to was slow and sang of some form of longing despair. He had tried going out with other girls but it all felt dull and useless.
People were finally coming back from school for the holidays and Billy did his best to not call you or show up on your doorstep like he wanted. He kept his distance and tried to think of any idea that would help him run into you. It had been four months, he felt like he had to play it cool. So when Tommy told him about Tina's Christmas Bash, Billy knew he was going but you weren’t there.
On Christmas Eve, Billy made a run to town for Susan, she needed something last minute for dinner the following day. He walked into Bradley’s Big Buy and knocked the snow from the back of his jacket. He glanced around to see there weren’t many shoppers as the store was about to close but his eyes landed on a familiar face. Your mother was walking around the produce section and Billy kept his gaze on her. He couldn’t decide if he wanted to approach her or not but he’d been dying for any information about you.
He grabbed a basket and acted like he was checking the produce out on the other side of her. “Billy?” He heard and nearly smirked as his plan worked perfectly.
“Oh, hi Mrs. (Y/L/N). Merry Christmas,” he said with a pleasant smile. He watched her walk around the stand and she gave him a hug. Billy liked your mother, she wasn’t fake, her hugs were warm and inviting, he could tell she genuinely liked him.
“Merry Christmas! What are you doing out so late on Christmas Eve?” She asked as she glanced him over.
“Grabbing some last minute stuff for Susan,” he said and mustered a smile but his eyes scanned around behind her, praying you’d show up. “How’s (Y/N) liking Yale?” He finally asked.
“Oh, she loves it. I was so devastated when she told me she wasn’t coming home for Christmas but I know she must be studying like crazy,” your mother said with a small smile.
Billy felt his heart sink, there was no way he was going to be seeing you now. He tried to keep the depressed look from his features but must have shown them a bit. Your mother rested a hand on his arm and gave him a sad, smile. “I know you must miss her too. I’m sure she writes and calls on occasion.”
Billy didn’t know what to say. He didn’t want to tell your mother that you weren’t speaking to him but he didn’t want to lie either. He simply smiled and nodded. Your mother gave him one more hug before she rushed off to the register before the store closed. Billy walked down the aisle to find what he needed for Susan, his feet dragging a little as he went.

Billy lifted his head when he heard a knock on his door and turned to see Susan cracking it open. “May I come in?” She asked quietly and he nodded, slightly confused. Christmas was the usual, Max had spent most of the day opening her gifts while Billy sat and watched. Neil had told him he got him a job at the hunting and camping store in town, he figured that was his gift this year. Billy had gone to his room once dinner was over and had been staring out his window at the falling snow.
“Merry Christmas,” she nearly hissed as she stepped in, she had a small smile on her face. Neil was asleep and so was Max, it was nearly 11:30 at night.
“Merry Christmas, Susan,” Billy said and mustered a small smile. Susan had been more tolerable since this summer after your visit, Billy didn’t know what it was but things had been mostly okay between them.
“I got you something,” she said and pulled a thin box from behind her back. Billy looked at the box, a confused and surprised expression on his face. “It’s nothing too big, just open it,” she said and nudged the gift towards him again.
Billy hesitated before he took the box wrapped with the red paper and a black ribbon. He smiled a little, seeing that Susan had wrapped it in colors he liked. He slowly unwrapped the box before pulling off the lid. There was a frame in the box and in the frame sat a picture of Billy sitting beside you at the dining room table. He was smiling at you and you had been laughing, the board game was on the table. Billy felt a tightening in his stomach and he had to breath in before he felt his eyes watering a little.
“I didn’t...I didn’t know you took this,” Billy mumbled after a moment. He blinked away the dampness in his eyes before looking up to her.
“I snapped it real quick and you were busy looking at someone else,” Susan said with a small smile. “I know you miss her Billy and I’m sorry that you do.”
Billy had a moment where he wanted to lash out at Susan for trying to make him vulnerable but he went against the instinct. He slowly stood and looked at Susan before he wrapped one arm around her for only a moment. The hug was weak and brief but the smile on her face said she understood.
“I’m sorry she didn’t come back for Christmas,” Susan said quietly and Billy simply nodded as he looked down to the picture in his hands. He sat himself back down on the bed and placed the frame on his nightstand, his eyes not leaving your face. “Sweet dreams, Billy,” Susan said quietly as she headed for the door.
“Susan?” Billy’s voice came out hesitant and quiet. She turned and looked to him, seeing him still staring at the photo beside his bed. “Thank you.” She smiled a bit more before she nodded and went out the door, closing it.

Billy didn’t particularly like his job but it kept him away from home and gave him money so he went. His boss wasn’t around much and didn’t really bother him when he was around. Things were getting busier as summer came and Billy was happy for the distraction. He was knelt down restocking shelves when he heard the door to the shop open. Normally he would have stood up and greeted the customer but Billy heard the owner talking to them.
“Hey, John. My dad wanted me to pick up a reel he had brought in. Said you guys were fixing it for him?” Your voice hit Billy’s ears and the hair on the back of his neck stood up.
“Ah, yes. Didn’t know you were going to be back from Yale just yet,” John said as he stepped towards the back of the shop.
“Finished up for one year,” you said with a small smile. “Happy to be home.”
“I’m sure you are,” John said before heading into the back. “I’ll be right out with it. Feel free to look around.”
You nodded and stood at the counter for a moment, drumming your fingers before you turned your head, scanning some items on the wall. You let yourself wander over to read one of the packages before you saw someone stand up out of the corner of your eye. You turned with a bit of a smile before you stopped. Your eyes locked with Billy’s and you both just stared. It was like the world paused, neither of you spoke a word and it seemed you couldn’t place how you felt in this moment.
“Here we are,” John said coming from the back and quickly taking your attention, making you jump a bit. “You tell your father he needs to let me know if he catches anything good with it.” John said with a smile. You nodded and forced a weak smile before you quickly ducked your head and almost bolted from the shop. “Well, wonder what got into her?” John asked with his hands on his hips, he glanced to Billy who shrugged and turned back to the shelf.
His eyes looked out the door to where you were getting into your car. He didn’t know what he was supposing to be feeling. He had figured he’d be so happy to see you but when you had stood before him he had felt his blood boil. He knew he’d messed up but he was angry that you had left for school before he could talk to you. He wasn’t given the chance to explain himself and you had just written him off and hadn’t even spoken to him, you had run off. He began restocking the shelf but he put everything down with a little more force.

Billy had spent a few weeks trying to think of something to say for when he ran into you again. He just needed to figure out what he was feeling and it wasn't easy for him. Billy wasn't good with his feelings, he wanted to just be angry at you for leaving him but knew it was more than that. He was mad at himself for making you want to go away, to leave him. He just wanted to know what he was going to say before he ran into you again and said something stupid. It didn’t help him any that now it seemed like you were everywhere. He kept catching glimpses of you all over town. He would pull into the Supermarket when you were leaving. He’d drive by a shop and you’d be there on the sidewalk. He started to believe he was going crazy until finally one night he walked into the diner and saw you sitting by the bar. He had stopped himself and swayed for a moment in his spot before he slowly walked up and sat on the barstool beside you.
You turned and looked at him, seeming surprised at first but then a soft smile placed itself on your lips. “Hey, Billy.”
Billy ignored the surge in his chest when you said his name and how badly he just wanted to hug you. “Hey,” he said quietly, his gaze on your face.
You broke eye contact and looked down to the bar before you let your finger trace a pattern in the frost on your milkshake glass. “You still mad at me?” You asked this question quietly and seemed unsure of it.
“I wish you had called,” Billy said, keeping himself calm. He wanted to get angry but he was forcing it down, trying not to ruin this with you. One wrong phrase or action could make this all go badly.
You scrunched up your face a bit and looked back to him from your drink. “I did call! Your father told me you didn’t want to speak to me again,” you explained. “I even wrote you!”
Billy suddenly felt his blood boiling and didn’t look at you as his eyes grew cold. “That fucking prick,” Billy muttered. He gripped his hands tightly and rung them a little, ignoring the urge to punch something.
“Billy,” you said quietly and hesitantly rested a hand on his shoulder. He looked to you, seeing your soft stare that searched his face. “You...You didn’t know I called you?”
“No,” Billy confessed and sighed a bit through his nose, trying to calm down again.
You sighed a little and frowned before pushing a hand back through your hair. “I’m so sorry, Billy. I was just so mad that day and I stayed mad. I just packed up everything and left for school. I felt so stupid once I was there and I missed you,” you said quietly with a frown. “I can’t believe he didn’t tell you that I called. What must you have thought?” Your last question was more of a rhetorical one but you looked to Billy when you heard him answer it.
“I thought...I thought you were done with me,” he admitted, feeling a bit stupid for being vulnerable.
Your expression softened and you wrapped your arm around Billy before leaning your head on his shoulder. Billy breathed you in and it seemed like the aching pit in his stomach, that had been there since last summer, lessened. “I’m never going to be done with you, Billy Hargrove.” He looked to you and saw your smile, he returned it before he pressed a kiss to your lips.

Things picked up right where they had left off, like nothing had changed. Billy hadn't expected it, he had figured you were going to hold some pent up anger towards him but you didn't. Billy remembered why he had fallen for you so quickly, things with you were easy. He had apologized and you had accepted it with a kiss.
Billy called you one night to ask you on a date and you both stayed on the phone for an hour. Billy normally didn't talk on the phone, he didn't like to but with your voice coming through the receiver he found himself dragging the phone as close to his room as possible. The cord had been too short but he was able to sit inside the room with his back against his closed door.
You had gone out with him to see a movie and when the film got dull he'd been surprised by you slipping down onto the floor and unbuckling his belt. It had been one of the most intense highs of his life and he couldn't get enough. Billy knew he was in deep though, when you had proudly gotten up and rested your head on his shoulder. The feeling of you close to him was almost better than the head you'd just given him and he didn't let himself deny it.
“So did you want to do something on the 4th? Hang out at the fair? Watch the fireworks?” You asked as Billy walked you to your door.
Billy frowned a little as you stopped at the door and looked to him. “I have to take Max out on the 4th and keep an eye on her.”
“That's fine. The more the merrier,” you said with a smile and he returned it. “Night, babe,” you whispered before pecking his lips softly and going inside.
Billy smiled as he walked back to his car, you being back in his life made him feel like he was soaring on air. He couldn't believe you had forgiven him but was so overly happy that you had. He blasted his loud rock on the drive home and sang along, a grin covering his features.

You walked beside Billy and glanced over to watch Dustin and the party. Your Aunt Claudia had asked if you would keep an eye on Dustin while you were there so it worked out that Billy was here for Max. You had told them they had free roam of the fairgrounds but that they weren’t allowed to leave it. They had agreed with a slight groan.
“I always forget you’re related to Dustin,” Billy said before laughing a little and shaking his head.
You smiled and watched Dustin excitedly talking to Lucas about something. You were walking around with Billy, checking out the different booths and seeing what they had. “Dustin’s my little man,” you confessed with a smile. “He wasn’t overly happy when he found out I was hanging out with you though,” you admitted, trying to catch Billy’s reaction. Dustin had seemed almost angry with you when he found out about you hanging out with Billy. You assured him that Billy hadn’t been mean to you and he seemed to let it slide but you knew he still wasn’t over the moon about it.
“I don’t suppose he would be,” Billy confessed with a small shrug. Billy went a bit quiet after that as he thought about what you had said. He was realizing what everyone must be saying about you both. You were going to Yale and were generally liked by everyone, he felt like a deadbeat and was not well liked.
“Come on,” you said and pulled Billy towards the bumper cars.
“I don’t like bumper cars,” Billy mumbled and stuffed his hands into his pockets.
“Fine. What about the Ferris wheel?” You said and motioned towards it. “Or you could win me a monkey?” You suggested with a smile, pointing at one of the stands.
“I don’t want to go on any of these stupid rides and I don't have to win you anything,” Billy snapped and you removed your arm from his.
“Okay. What happened?” You said, rounding on him so he would look at you, he glanced away and busied himself with getting out a cigarette. “You were fine. Why are you mad now?”
“I'm not mad. I just don't want to go on the stupid rides,” he said, his tone cold and impatient.
“Alright. Don't tell me,” you said and crossed your arms. There was a pause between you both and you sighed a bit. You turned and began walking off.
“Where are you going?” Billy asked with a glare.
“To ride the stupid bumper cars,” you retorted over your shoulder before you walked over and got in line.
Billy grumbled and sighed out his irritation. He wanted to walk over and stand behind you but he didn't let himself. He headed back to his car.
When Billy got to his car he went through an entire pack of cigarettes as he fumed. He waited in his vehicle and tried to cool off for more than an hour. It was then he saw you heading out of the fairgrounds, holding onto a stuffed monkey. Steve Harrington stood beside you and you were both smiling and talking as Dustin was trailing behind with the party. Billy was pissed and he had to restrain himself from getting out of the car. He knew it would only go badly and end with him smashing in Steve's face.
He saw Steve ask you something and motion to the sky. You gave him a smile but shook your head. Billy watched you say something and hug Steve before waving and walking away. The party headed towards Steve's car and Billy saw you coming towards him. He was half tempted to drive off and leave you there. He just gripped his steering wheel and glared forward as you got in the passenger side.
“Steve's going to take the kids to see the fireworks,” you said and glanced to Billy. He didn't respond to you and you looked to the monkey on your lap. “I won you a monkey,” you tried and wiggled it a little towards Billy. “It’s green. Your favorite color,” you said.
Billy wanted to stay mad but he glanced at the monkey. He felt like an asshole, which he normally seemed to do when he was mean to you. He knew he had ruined the night you both could have had. He could have won you the monkey and walked around with his arm around you, watching you smile and hang on him like you always used to.
“I'm an asshole,” he confessed as he took the monkey from you and looked at it.
“You did kind of ruin this vision I had in my head,” you admitted but gave him a small smile. “Probably for the best.” Billy glanced to you. “We were going to walk around and all the girls would be so envious because I got to have Billy Hargrove with his arm around me. Then we were going to to have crazy sex on the hood of your car under the fireworks.”
Billy smiled a little and shook his head at you. Somehow you always seemed to make him feel better but in the same respect, it only made him feel worse for ever being harsh towards you. It only made him believe that he didn't deserve you even more.
“I mean,” you said and checked your watch. “We could still make it to go have sex under the fireworks,” you said and glanced up to see Billy's head snap towards you. “I mean, if you want,” you teased.
Billy put the car in drive and pulled out from the fair’s parking lot. Billy was the master of finding places to hide and have sex, he pulled down a road until he came to a clearing.
You got out and he followed before you set yourself on his hood and took his face in your hands. You felt his hands run up your thighs to your shorts and you smirked. “You can be an asshole,” you whispered against his lips. “But I wouldn't have you any other way.”
Billy pressed his mouth to yours and held you closely. You wrapped your arms around his neck and pressed close to him. A loud bang jumped you both apart before you looked up and saw the fireworks that were being set off from the lake. You giggled at Billy before kissing him again.
The fireworks kept sounding off over head as you both hurriedly removed your clothing. You were a tangle of limbs as you both maneuvered around each other. You hadn’t had Billy since last summer and you were desperate to feel him. When Billy finally pushed himself inside, you laid back over the hood and arched your back. Billy couldn’t deny himself and leaned down, tonguing at your breasts that were pushed up towards him.
Your mouths continued to sloppily clash together as Billy’s motions got more desperate and you started arching your back. Billy knew by the little whimpers that you were letting out that you were loving every moment. This is why Billy couldn’t get enough of you. The sex was like nothing he’d ever had before and you always surprised him. He ran his hand up your thigh that was wrapped around his hip and hummed against your throat as he placed a nip against the curve of your shoulder.
Your hands gripped onto Billy’s back tightly and you could feel the muscles working under the skin. Everything was beginning to push you over the edge, driving you towards the inevitable. You hadn’t had Billy’s touch in almost a year and now here you were in a field with him making you insane while fireworks flashed, lighting up the sky. When one of Billy’s hands slipped down between you both and ran against your slit, you tensed up and whimpered loudly, earning a breathy moan from Billy.
“You’re so fucking perfect, kitten,” Billy whispered against your ear before he let out another tiny grunt that made goosebumps cover your skin.
The desperation grew and as the fireworks picked up and began going off rapidly you nearly screamed Billy’s name. He pressed his mouth to yours and moaned loudly through his thrusts. The last fireworks went off and you both laid still against each other, breathing heavily. It took a few moments before you shifted apart and you stretched your legs a bit before standing up and bending down to get your shorts. You squeaked when you felt Billy place a playful tap on your ass.
You glanced back over your shoulder and saw him smirk at you before you continued pulling on your shorts. You found your bra and put it on but when you got to your shirt, you felt arms snake around your waist and gentle kisses being placed up the side of your neck. You reached your hand back and slid your fingers through Billy’s locks with a content noise. You felt Billy’s grip around your waist and the way he kept his face buried into the crook of your neck for a moment. You realized this was the most intimate, sentimental thing Billy had ever done with you. It was like he just wanted to be close and it left you feeling like you were on top of the world.
“I don’t want to take you home yet,” he mumbled against your shoulder before he rested his chin against it instead.
“You have to meet Steve,” you said with a pout even if Billy couldn’t see it. “He said he would wait in town for you to come get Max.”
Billy sighed before he pulled away a little but took your hand in his, pulling you towards his car. He opened your door for you before he brought you home, holding your hand for most of the way. He followed you to your door and seemed almost saddened when you stepped up to go inside. He let go of your hand and slid his into his front pocket, seeming like he didn’t know what to say but that he wanted to say something. “I’m sorry about the fair,” he confessed after a moment, and pursed his lips, hiding a frown.
“It’s okay,” you said with a small smile. “I had fun tonight.” He smiled up at you a little and you leaned down, pressing a soft kiss on his lips. “Meet me tomorrow around seven? My parents are leaving for the weekend. Would be just you and me,” You explained hopefully and smiled when Billy nodded. You pressed another soft kiss to his lips. “Night, Billy.”
“Sweet dreams, doll,” he said quietly and slid his hands into his pockets. He watched you go inside like he was in a daze until he heard the door close and you were out of sight. He sighed softly before jogging to his car and going to pick up Max.
Billy didn’t think anything could ruin his night. He picked Max up in town and let her listen to a song she liked, even though he hated it. He pulled up out front of their home and waited for her before going inside.
“Where the hell have you all been?” Billy closed his eyes when he heard his father's voice.
Max looked to her watch and then Neil. “We watched the fireworks and then got some ice cream,” she said, trying to bait Neil away from Billy. She knew he wouldn’t bother her so she was trying to keep him from getting on Billy’s case. Max had learned that Billy could do or say nothing right in Neil’s eyes.
“Maxine, could you go to your room and let me talk to Billy alone?” Neil said. Max shot Billy a sad glance before she nodded and slowly went to her room, closing the door. “Off with that bitch again?”
“She’s not a bitch,” Billy managed but his voice didn’t sound very strong and he kicked himself for it. “Don’t talk about her like that.”
“How stupid are you?! That girl ain’t doing nothing but using you! You’re her little bit of fun she gets to have when she comes back home for the summer. Soon enough she’ll be back at college fucking whoever,” Neil said and Billy clenched his fists. “Are you really dumb enough to think she wants anything to do with you? A girl like that has her pick of every cock that walks her way! Don’t let yourself believe for one second that you’re worth her time,” Neil said bitterly, menacingly.
“She cares about me,” Billy defended as he felt sadness sneaking into his mind. Neil was plaguing his thoughts and resurrecting the previously buried ones from earlier in the evening.
Neil laughed and the sound tore into Billy, making him feel stupid and humiliated. “She is just counting the days she has left until she can go back to sucking every dick that’s at Yale! Least those guys can afford to buy her a house, a new car even! What do you have to offer her Billy, huh?” Billy looked down and hated himself, his eyes were watering and he felt like his chest was ripping open. “Lord, Jesus,” Neil hissed and sighed. “You cry like a little faggot to top it all off.”
Billy wiped at his eyes and looked back up to his father. “What happened to the letters she sent me? I know you stole them!”
Neil chuckled and walked over to the cabinet in the dining room. He grabbed a stack of letters from one of the top shelves, in the back and held them in his hand. “I must have just forgotten to give them to you,” Neil said with a shrug. Billy looked at the different envelopes and reached for them but Neil held them away. “I read them all kid. Nothing worth reading. Though I did enjoy the Polaroid of her in her panties.” Billy darted forward to get them and Neil punched him square in the jaw.
Billy felt a swift kick to his face once he had fallen back and tried not to let his eyes water up from the burning pain. He flinched when Neil leaned over him, getting in his face as he lifted him by his shirt. “Get it through your head! You are nothing! Can’t you see I’m trying to stop you from humiliating yourself!? You are such a waste!” Neil snapped before he stomped off, leaving Billy curled up on the floor.
Billy slowly got himself up when he didn't hear any more movement in the house and went into his room. He walked towards his closet before he stopped. He felt a tightness in his chest for a moment and found a shaky breath leave his mouth. He closed his eyes and felt his tears run down his face as he began to believe every word his father had said.
__ __
Billy didn’t show up around seven like he said he would. You hadn’t been too worried until it was almost nine and you found yourself standing in the kitchen, holding the phone to your ear. It rang a few times before someone mumbled a greeting, you figured it was Billy, it sounded like him.
“Hey, Billy?” You asked, making sure. There was silence before a slight noise of acknowledgement, you scrunched your eyebrows together a little. “Are you alright?”
“Fine,” he mumbled back with a sigh.
“I uh-,” you paused, confused by his apparent disinterest. “Are you still coming over?”
There was a pause. “I don’t know. I've got some stuff I gotta do this weekend,” he mumbled.
“Oh,” you said and couldn't hide the sadness in your tone. “Okay. Well just…,” you really didn't know what to say. “Have a good weekend I guess.” You wanted to tell him to come over if he had a second this weekend but wouldn't lower yourself to that level, feel like you were begging. He had been invited, if he wanted to, he would.
There was another pause and you rolled your eyes. “Night, Hargrove,” you mumbled before slamming down the receiver. You hadn't called him by his last name since last summer when you both had only been messing around for about a month, you hoped it would sink in to him that you were less than amused.
You were watching a movie on the couch with a bowl of popcorn when you heard a knock on your door. You munched hurriedly on your popcorn as you walked up to open it. You smiled when you saw Dustin’s grinning face and greeted him before pulling him into a hug. You saw Steve’s red BMW by the road and shot him a wave which he returned.
“What are you doing here, troublemaker?” You asked as you lead him in and closed the door.
“Your mom said you’d be alone all weekend. I figured I would come keep you company,” Dustin said as he dropped his bag down by the door.
“It’s almost ten, does Aunt Claudia know you’re here?” You said, crossing your arms and eyeing him suspiciously.
“Of course she does! I’ve been here since seven, remember?” Dustin said with his big grin and a snort.
“You better not get me in any trouble,” you said with a smile at him. You figured he’d just been out with his friends, nothing too bad.
“So, no Billy?” Dustin asked after a moment, seeing the empty couch as he followed you into the living room. His tone said he had already expected that outcome and you eyed him with your arms still crossed. Dustin frowned, knowing he’d been caught. “Max told me he wasn’t coming.”
“Yeah, well. I’d rather spend the night with you anyway,” you said honestly. If Billy was going to be randomly distant without explaining himself you didn’t want to deal with it.
“So what are we watching?” Dustin asked and plopped down on the couch, instantly cramming his hand into the bowl of popcorn.
“Well I-,” you began but there was another knock on the door. You scrunched up your face before going over and answering it. You saw Billy standing on the step, looking pissed but you also noticed his face was bruised up pretty badly. “Billy? Babe, what happened?” You asked but he began talking over you before you could finish.
“So, what? I tell you I can’t come and show up to see Harrington pulling off?!” He snapped and motioned his arms wildly.
You stood almost in shock for a moment before irritation took over and you scoffed. “You’re joking, right?” You crossed your arms and narrowed your eyes at him.
“Why the fuck was he here?!” Billy nearly hollered as he darted towards you a little and you backed up for a moment, shrinking down. Then he could physically see your confidence rally and you shoved him back out of the doorway.
You went to speak but a voice behind you drew both of your attentions. “Uh, hi!” Dustin said and waved. “I needed a ride.”
You looked back to Billy with a smug face as he seemed to realize he was acting like a complete ass. You kept your hand on the door and tilted your head to the side, the smug expression remaining on your features. You kept a hand on your hip and looked him up and down. “I hope you feel like shit now,” you mumbled with an almost amused expression. You couldn’t believe Billy had the nerve to blow you off and then accuse you of being deceitful.
Billy turned and started walking towards his car and you were going to let him before you sighed and followed him, closing the door so Dustin would get the hint not to follow. “Billy, stop,” you tried, walking behind him but he kept stomping towards his car. “Would you just talk to me!?” You finally shouted and caught his arm, having to jog up to catch him. He ripped it away from you but had stopped, looking at the ground. “What is wrong, Billy?” You finally asked, defeat laced your voice and you looked to him sadly. He ignored you and lit a cigarette. You brought your hands to your face for a moment as you felt overwhelmed. You knew something had been bothering Billy since last night at the fair and you just wanted him to tell you. “Billy, come on,” you tried and reached for his arm which he moved away.
You looked at him and he stood there in silence, glaring at the ground and blowing out his smoke. You waited until he was halfway through his cigarettes before you stopped hugging yourself and tried to bring your arms around his waist. He resisted at first and pulled back a bit but you managed to get your arms around him and rest your head on his shoulder. Your hair blew gently in the breeze and all Billy could smell was you. He let a hand come up and rest on your lower back.
“Talk to me,” you quietly pleaded, your voice sounding so sad that it finally stirred him.
“I'm no good for you,” he muttered and kept his gaze down. He got irritated with himself when he felt his eyes flare up a bit.
You pulled back from him quickly and looked him in the eye, he wouldn't meet your stare. “Billy Hargrove, you better be joking!” You scolded but kept your tone soft.
“I don’t need your charity,” Billy snapped, returning to his bitter demeanor and pulling back from you. “Like I should just be lucky to be with you when you're here for the summer! Like I should be lucky to have you at all!”
You shook your head and scrunched up your eyes. “Billy, what are you talking about?”
“You know you're too good for me!” He finally snapped and spread his arms. His eyes finally met yours and they looked so full of anger and hatred you almost stepped back. “You don't fucking need me. You pity me! Acting like I should just be grateful you want to come home and fuck me two months out of the year!”
You scoffed, unable to hold it back, shocked by his words. “Is that what you really think, Billy?” You asked, hurt and so angered that he saw you like that.
“I don’t think anything. I fucking know it, sweetheart,” he said and his voice was so cold and hateful you nearly felt your heart breaking in your chest.
“Well this might fucking surprise you then because I thought I was lucky to have you!” You shot back and you found yourself screaming as you felt so much hurt. “Last night I was laying in bed just thinking about how I couldn’t believe that you liked me! That you actually could have feelings for me beyond just having someone to fuck!” You said and the anger in his eyes began dissolving into regret. “You might not know how amazing you are Billy but I do! You are funny and smart and so sweet when you want to be but goddammit! Right now you are just the most angry, hateful person I've ever met in my life!” You said and you found yourself crying by the end of it all.
Billy was quiet for a moment, shocked by your outburst and it felt like he was hit with a brick wall. He couldn't believe this was how you felt about him. “(Y/N) I-,” but he didn't know what to say. No apology would cover his actions, no words would make this go away.
“Save it,” you said and shook your head before you wiped your eyes with a tiny sob. “I knew I could never hope for this to end the way I wanted.” You mumbled before heading back to your house.
“How did you want it to end?” Billy found himself asking when you reached for your door.
“It didn't,” you whimpered before you went inside and closed your door.
Billy found his eyes instantly watered up and he dug his nails onto the palm of his hand as he went around and got into his car. He sat for a moment and found himself huffing angrily before he punched his hand into his steering wheel repeatedly. He found himself throwing his hands against the wheel before he grabbed it and shook himself, reefing on the wheel. “Goddamnit!”

Billy stared blankly at the shelf he was restocking. It had been a week since he'd last seen you that night at your house. He hated himself more than ever. He felt like everytime he blinked he could see your heartbroken face, see how bad he had messed up. He wanted to talk to you, everyday but he couldn't even begin to piece anything together to say. He heard the shop bell ring and looked over to see Max coming in with the party, he shot them a lazily confused glance.
“Billy!” Dustin said suddenly and ran up to the man. “Billy you have to come with me!”
“What is it?! What's wrong?!” Billy said, instantly panicked by Dustin's urgent words and scared face. He knew if they were coming to him, something bad must be happening to you.
“(Y/N) is leaving!” Dustin squawked and threw his hands in the air. Billy calmed a little and cast his gaze downward. He was going to lose you and there was no chance of getting you back. “You have to stop her! Come on! You don't want it to end this way!” Dustin tried.
“Kid, what are you doing here? You don't like me. So why are you doing this?” Billy asked, a slight bitterness in his tone.
“Because I like (Y/N) and I know she likes you,” Dustin explained. “I have never seen my cousin cry so hard in my life. She's miserable!”
“Billy, come on,” Max said with a sigh.
Billy sighed and glanced around for a moment before he made up his mind. He quickly set down the items in his hand and ran around the shelf, heading for the door.
“Where the hell is he going?” The kids turned to see John standing behind the register, staring after Billy.
The kids all stammered and glanced to each other for a moment before they quickly left the store.

Billy pulled up in front of your house just in time to see your car backing out of the driveway. He drove up behind you and blocked your path before he shut off his car and got out.
“What the fuck are you doing?!” You asked when you got out of your car. You were definitely surprised to see Billy at all but at the moment, you just wanted to leave.
“I let you go last time, I'm not doing that shit again,” Billy mumbled quickly as he came up to you. “Listen, I'm sorry, okay?” He started, moving his hands frantically as he searched for words. “All I know is that everyday that you were gone I felt like a part of me was missing and that's stupid,” Billy said with a sigh and shook his head. “But it's true damn it!”
You were hugging yourself as you looked to him, your eyes watering a little, understanding exactly what he was saying. You had felt foolish for feeling so miserable without Billy after being with him for only two months but it really did feel that way.
“I don't believe in fate and I don't believe in soulmates,” Billy said honestly. “But I believe you're the closest damn thing I'm going to get to it. Which only makes me feel like I don't deserve you even more! I'm scared that you now know you hold that power over me. There,” he said and raised his arms before he let them drop. “I told you what's been bothering me.”
You stared at Billy, tears still gleaming in your eyes as you shook your head and looked away from him for a moment before looking down. You kept your arms wrapped around your middle and took in what he said.
Billy felt like every second of silence was an eternity and after a few moments he started to panic. What if you just got back in your car and told him to leave? Billy didn't think he could survive that, which only made him feel even dumber for being so crazy about you.
You sighed softly through your nose before you looked up to him and took a step towards him, then another and another until you stood right before him. He looked down at your face, searching for any sign that you felt for him like he felt for you.
You slowly took your arms from around yourself and hugged them around Billy's middle, pulling yourself snug to his chest and leaning your head against him. You breathed him in and everything felt so perfect for that moment as you felt his hand run up your back.
“Don’t ever try to leave me again,” you mumbled against his shoulder and sniffled quietly.
Billy hugged you tightly to him before placing a kiss on the top of your head. He let his cheek rest there after and closed his eyes with relief. He had you held close to him and he wasn't going to let you go anywhere.

“Last night in Hawkins,” you hummed from where your head laid on Billy's chest. You both were laying on the hood of his car, looking up at the stars. You had went back to the field that you had been at during the fireworks and relived the memory. Summer was coming to a close again and you were feeling miserable as you breathed Billy in, you were going to miss him.
“Until next summer,” Billy said with a little sigh and rubbed at your back. He let his head fall to the side, just seeming to rest it but it was so he could bury his nose in your hair and take you in. “I'm going to miss you,” he admitted.
You smiled a little, noting just how far Billy had come in your relationship. “I'm going to miss you too,” you said sadly and traced a tiny pattern on his chest where his shirt was unbuttoned.
“I should get you home,” Billy finally said. “It's late and you have an early morning,” he reminded.
You sighed a little but sat up, pulling yourself from Billy's side felt like the hardest thing you'd had to do in a while. He slid off the car first and turned to you, placing his hands on either side of you, touching the hood. He looked into your eyes for a moment before he pressed a kiss to your lips.
“You're not going to forget me, right?” You asked sheepishly, having a moment of insecurity.
Billy tsked and rolled his eyes at you. “If you ask me something that stupid again, I'll spank you,” he teased but his tone said he didn't even see what you asked as a real question, of course he wouldn't.
You smiled a little and let your arms dangle on his shoulders, around his neck. “I love you,” you quietly admitted. Neither of you had actually said it and you felt your chest tighten with panic. You hadn't meant to say it, it just slipped out. You did mean it but you worried Billy was going to freak out and distance himself.
Billy's eyes widened for a moment and he swayed away from you a little for a moment. His body swayed back after he glanced to the side and seemed to make up his mind. “I love you too, baby,” he whispered before he pressed another kiss to your lips but this one was different. This was a kiss that could end worlds because Billy Hargrove was kissing you slow and deep and your whole body felt light. It was intimate and like no kiss he had ever given you before and once again, you felt like the luckiest girl alive.
Billy pulled back after a moment and smiled at you in this sweet way that made you dizzy. “Let's get you home,” he said after a moment and you nodded before sliding off the hood.
The car ride was quiet but it wasn't awkward, just heavy with the impending thought of this would be your last ride together for almost another four months. Billy held your hand the whole way and when you got home and he walked you to your door, you latched onto him. You didn't want to let him go, you just wanted to keep your arms around him forever and feel him hold onto you in a way that only Billy did.
“You better drive safe tomorrow,” he whispered and you thought it was odd but then you heard him sniffle quietly. “Stop if you get tired and call me as soon as you get there,” he demanded but kept his arms wrapped so tightly around you. Your eyes watered as you nodded. “God, this sucks. I'm going to fucking miss you so bad,” Billy admitted and coughed out a small sob like sound that broke your heart.
“I'll call every night,” you assured. “I'll be home for Christmas,” you reminded but even you felt the pain in your chest that was going to come from being apart.
“I wish I could stay,” Billy whispered before he finally, slowly pulled away from you a little. He rested a hand on your cheek and wiped a tear away. You gave him a playful pout and wiped his cheeks as well. Your father was still strict about guys being in the house overnight, he didn't care if you were eighteen, it was still his home.
“I wish you could too,” you said and gave him a little frown.
Billy cupped your face in his hands and kissed you one last time. “I have to let you go or I'll never let you go,” he admitted and you smiled sadly, knowing all too well what he meant. Billy slowly pried himself away from you and put his hands in his pockets. “Sweet dreams, kitten.”
“Night, B,” you said with a little smile. He slowly walked down the steps like he was physically dragging himself away. You watched him get in his car and he watched you go in, both of you feeling the pull on your chest as he drove away.

Being away from Billy wasn't proving easy. Each day seemed like an eternity and at two months you found yourself standing in the dorm hallway with tears in your eyes. “I just want to come home,” you whimpered into the receiver. “I miss you and I hate it here,” you tried.
“I miss you too, baby but you can't do that. This is amazing for you,” Billy's voice argued. “You're at Yale. You can't throw it all away.”
You closed your eyes tightly as you listened to him and nodded like he could see it. You breathed out shakily and sniffled. “I just...It’s been a long week,” you squeaked and bit your lip. One of your professors had berated you in front of your entire class because you had misunderstood an assignment and you remembered everyone looking at you. Plus there was a guy in one of your classes who kept harassing you and it made you feel uncomfortable when he would make comments towards you constantly.
“I'm sorry, baby,” Billy said and you could hear a small sigh. You knew he was as frustrated as you were that he wasn't there to comfort you.
“I'll be okay,” you said but didn't really believe it, that was apparent in your voice.
“I love you,” Billy said quietly.
“I love you too,” you whispered back and your eyes flared up again. “I'll call you tomorrow,” you said before sniffling a little.
“Okay, doll,” Billy said and you could hear he was upset that you were so sad. “Sweet Dreams.”
“Night,” you nearly whimpered before you slowly hung up. You wiped under your eyes before heading to your room.
The next day you spent your afternoon sat outside on a park bench and busied yourself with redoing your incorrect assignment. You normally studied in your room but your roommate was busy making out with her boyfriend and you couldn't concentrate.
“Well, I mean for Yale I was expecting a little more but I guess it's alright,” you heard and your head shot up a little. Your eyes rested on a pair of leather boots before you looked up the rest of the way. “Hey, kitten,” Billy purred and you jumped up from the bench, your books and notepad flying to the ground. Billy laughed warmly when you jumped up and wrapped yourself around him. His hand rubbed at your back while the other arm helped hold you up and it was like everything else melted away.
“What the hell are you doing here?!” You asked in shocked, disbelief.
“I missed you and you sounded so sad,” Billy confessed as you pulled back to look at him. “And maybe I've been saving up since before you left to come out here and get an apartment while you're here.”
“You didn't?!” You asked, slightly shocked.
“Oh, I did, doll,” Billy said with a smirk and you pressed your mouth to his, hugging onto him tighter. “You got time to see it?” Billy asked when you pulled away and you nodded excitedly.
You got down and picked up your books, sliding them into your bag before you turned and saw Billy waiting for you. He held his cigarette by his side and when you turned he took his hand from his front pocket and held it out to you. You smiled and took it, letting him lead you to his car. You slid into the familiar Camaro and when Billy slid into the driver's seat you found a swelling in your chest. You looked at him as you felt like everything was a dream and all your homesickness washed away.
“What's up?” Billy asked, seeing your stare.
“Nothing,” you said with a smile before you leaned over and kissed him again. You felt his hand grab yours when you pulled away. Billy started the Camaro and gunned it out of the parking lot. You couldn't believe the best thing in your life started with a simple knock on your door.
