“So, how was your latest pilgrimage, Gandalf?” Aragorn asked, taking a swig from his beer.
“Oh, stop, it was hardly a pilgrimage,” the old man huffed, cautiously flipping burgers on the grill. A grey apron protected his blue hawaiian shirt from the grease that spat back up.
“Dear friend, if trekking through Austria with no contact with anyone for some weeks is not considered a pilgrimage, I don’t know what is.”
“It was just a vacation. Nothing more.”
“Saruman being an ass again?”
“Oh, yes, of course. You know him. Doesn’t leave me or the others alone. Galadriel and Elrond have had it up to here with his management skills.”
“Or lack thereof.”
“You can say that again. Now, go and fetch the plates for me, young man.”
Aragorn grinned, doing as he was told, walking inside the old man’s large and well-kept home. Boromir was rummaging through the cooler in the kitchen. The man’s forehead was dewy with sweat as he gladly popped open an ice cold beer. He greeted Aragorn with a nod of his head.
“Need any help?” he asked as he saw Aragorn grab a stack of plates from the cupboard.
“Oh, no it’s fine. If you want to carry that cooler outside that’d help, though.”
The two men set up the large table outside on the patio, fetching cutlery and cups while Aragorn whistled for his dog, Brego. As the German Shepherd bounded across the lawn to him, Merry and Pippin, who’d been playing with him, followed.
"Food’s ready,” Aragorn said. Merry took a sniff of the air.
“No it’s not, it’s not done until the sausages are burnt black, in proper Gandalf-style cooking.”
A sharp slap against the back of his head followed and Gandalf scowled. “Keep it up and there’ll be no food for you at all, Meriadoc.”
Boromir tossed a ball for Brego to catch as he sat down with a plate of two burgers and a heaping serving of potato salad. Aragorn wandered over to the pool, where his wife and Legolas were busy trying to get a stout and burly Gimli to do water acrobatics with them.
“This is ridiculous!” he gasped, struggling in the water, his red beard soaked to a darker shade. Arwen giggled and helped him to the shallow end.
“You just need more practice,” she said, noticing Aragorn and smiling brightly as he leaned against a chair to watch the trio.
“Or maybe it’s because my legs aren’t as goddamn long as you thin, lanky trees!” he said in a gruff tone.
“Shall I find you a box then?” Legolas joked. Gimli nearly tackled him and pulled him under the water if the blonde wasn’t so swift. The three looked towards Aragorn who cleared his throat.
“Food?” he offered.
“Ah! About time! Let me out first, I’ve got to get my hands on some food before Peregrin eats everything,” Gimli said, waddling in the water to the the nearest steps as quick as his stout legs could carry him. Arwen came out as graceful as ever, wrapping a towel around herself and greeting Aragorn with a kiss.
“Have you seen Frodo and Sam?” he asked her.
“Oh, I think they’re still in the library with Rosie,” she said. “Gandalf’s got so many books, and Frodo promised to borrow a few to give to Bilbo when he got home.”
Aragorn nodded his thanks and as she walked away he went back inside the large mansion to fetch the last few stragglers of their crew. He opened the door of the library and stumbled upon Sam snoring into a book and Frodo and Rosie eagerly chatting over some volume he held in his hands.
“Knock knock,” Aragorn whispered. They looked up, startled. “Burgers, anyone?”
“Oh, finally!” Rosie whispered excitedly. “Go, go on Frodo. I’ll wake the sleepyhead up.”
“Kids have been draining him, poor Sam,” Frodo chuckled as he joined Aragorn outside. “I bet the babysitter’s gonna demand a fortune after he gets home tonight.”
“Well, who in their right mind would have so many children?” Aragorn replied as they walked back to the rest of the party. “Arwen and I can hardly handle just one sometimes.”
“How is dear Eldarion nowadays?”
“Oh, good. He misses Uncle Frodo, you know. You need to stop by more often; you’ve more understanding of those modern video games than I do. I just take him fishing, but that seems to bore him often.”
Frodo laughed as they got outside. “I’ll make sure to come visit soon.”
He grabbed a plate and a blackened burger, shuffling in next to Merry and Pippin. Boromir was handing out drinks as Legolas ladled more salad onto Gimli’s plate when he wasn’t looking, and Brego was already begging for scraps underneath the table. A sleepy Samwise joined them on the arm of Rosie and the giant party huddled around the table, swatting away curious flies and bees with nonchalance.
The sun was bright and the summer air was hot and humid, and their conversations lasted long into the night around bonfires and late night swims, with a satisfied host falling asleep in his lawn chair with his grey bucket hat falling over his eyes.
A/N: Gandalf is rich with the company he works for alongside Elrond, Galadriel and Saruman. Therefore his home has ample space to host giant barbecues with his many companions. He wears bucket hats and hawaiian t-shirts and sucks at grilling burgers and I will stand by that head canon :) maybe a pt 2 will come of this; it was a lot of fun.
It’s been awhile since Tim had actually visited Ludwig’s house. For some reason he had visited Tim in Amsterdam way more often. But that was also easier since Tim had children and Ludwig could visit his girlfriend then as well. Not it was time again for Tim to visit and he could bring his kids too of course. They were most welcome in Ludwig’s big house, he had the space after all. And with this nice summer weather he wanted to have a nice barbecue with his best friend. Since in his opinion Tim’s choice on barbecue things was so limited he wanted to do it at his own place. It would also be nice for the dogs to actually stay at home for once. The poor boys craved their master’s attention.
Ludwig was up early that day, as usual, to get everything ready for the arrival of his friend. The day before he had bought everything they needed, even vegetables! Because he knew how Tim could get. He used the rather cool morning to clean the house and even bake something nice for his guests. He even made sure his garden looked presentable and made the pool baby proof.
The afternoon was hot and he really didn’t know what to do with himself so he just sat inside (it’s too warm outside) and read his book until the guests would arrive.
