One of my favorite trans YouTuber’s is Summer Luk, a trans woman of color. I go to her for a lot of education, especially in regard to trans women education and health. But alongside trans womens health, she talks about general trans issues.
Anyway, I wanted to share this video from her. We talk about who and who shouldn’t have access to certain spaces and clinics often based off of what body parts they have, and most all of these conversations leave trans women out.
I didn’t know this, and I reckon a lot of people didn’t know this. Like Summer says, it’s transphobia, but I also feel like it’s on us as well. Even well meaning non cis, TME people.
In the past I talked about trans women having the right to be in spaces that are traditionally spaces regarded for cis women. In fact all trans people deserve to be there, but I think we’ve been inclusive to include the identities of others in those conversations.
This isn’t to say that trans men, masc, and embies are readily acceepted into women’s health clinics. They aren’t. Only if you’re feminine presenting, and that’s a privlege I can admit i have. And we still need to advocate for the acceptance of masc trans men and enbies in women’s health centers.
But also trans women need to same allowance and acceptabnce as well, and we need to talk about it. Because the above is important. Trans women who are mothers or are considering nursing and breastfeeding deserve to have the comfort and education in a place that caters to their needs as well. I think more trans women were in these spaces, then these would be things we could, ya know, learn more.
Imagine trans couples each taking a huge role in the rearing of a child in terms of birth and nursing, or just a trans woman or femme who wants to be a mother and provide for a baby learning things like this.
Trans women deserve to be in these spaces as well.
Like this is amazing, like the body and science are amazing, and I’m shocked that in all my 25 years of life i’m just figuring this out.
And of course, perhaps the objective should be to make “women’s” centers inclusive of all genders in the future.
Also, follow Summer Luk! She’s awesome!
