It’s been a rough first day. Turns out, dealing with high schoolers is way harder than she thought. If two years ago, when Lily was fresh out of university, someone told her that in two years, she’d be hiding in a somewhat abandoned classroom of her bloody workplace—Lily would have not even laughed.
The mere idea of her feeling worn out this soon was and still is absurd. Disappointing too, if she’s being honest. Although, some might disagree.
No, scratch that, two people will surely disagree, two who have never felt disappointed in or by Lily.
Thus explains why Lily makes sure of the closed door so no one can interrupt her, and dials the only voices she needs to hear right now.
Less than two beats is required for Lily to be greeted by the charming voice of James saying “Hey honey,” followed by the usual “Hey love,” from Regulus.
Both are very aware of Lily’s anxiety about her first day, and that’s what they ask first and foremost. Gifting a safe space to each other is their second nature by now, so Lily comfortably bares her heart.
“Baby, of course they’re brutal, have you forgotten your teenage years already?” James laughs with no malice to his voice, and Regulus mirrors him but not before saying, “We’re perfectly capable of reminding you, even though we weren’t there.”
Lily huffs out an embarrassed laugh, easily recalling how much of a bratty little devil she was.
When they finally stop joking and playing “Do you remember when you…?” with her, Lily doesn’t need to close her eyes to see the pair of matching smiles she can hear evidently in their voices.
“Love, I’m sure you are and will continue to be as perfect as a human imperfect by nature is capable of,” the soothing voice of Regulus is more calming than any meditation, Lily can bet and win against anyone.
“And you know you can always rely on us, when it gets hard, or when they forget how lucky they are to have a teacher as cool and kind as you.” James uses that low and soft tone of his that’s almost like a melody saved for reassurance of his love for them both.
Lily smiles and can’t help but to close her eyes. Now her body feels heavy, wrapped in two warm blankets of safety, comfort and love—replacing the bitter rush of anxiety in her guts. “I know.”
